ETC 4-3 (RC) S.E, (ETC) (Semester — IV) Examination, May/June 2012 ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY Duration : 3 Hours Instructions: 1) Answer any five questions each Module. Total Marks : 100 with atleast one question from 2) Assume suitable data it necessary. MODULE -1 1. a) Briefly describe any four components and give atleast one function ofeach: 8 i) Commutator il). Yoke or Magnetic frame ill) Brushes iv) Slip rings v) Armature care. b) A 220V shunt motor with an armature resistance of 0.5Q is excited to give Constant main field. At full load the motor runs at 500 revolutions per minute and takes an armature current of 30A. If a resistance of 1 is placed in the armature circuit, then find the speed at i) Full load torque ii) Double full load torque. c) Derive the expression for the torque developed by the armature of ade motor. 6 2. a) Derive the relation between full load torque and maximum torque ina 3-phase induction motor. b) Draw and explain Torque-Slip characteristics of a3-phase induction motor. 6 ©) Explain the effect of change in supply voltage on the torque and speed of a 3-phase induction motor. 9) A 6-pole, 3:phase, 50 Hz induction motor is running at full load with a slip of 4%. The rotor is star connected and its resistance and stand still reactance are 0.259 and 1.52 per phase. The emf between the open circuited slip rings is 100V. Also mention their advantages and disadvantages, MODULE =I }) Give atleast three advantages of current transformer over shunts for current measurement. 1) Acurrent transformer has a bar primary and 300 secondary winding turns. The secondary winding burden is an ammeter of resistance 1.20 and reactance of 0.50; the secondary winding has a resistance of 0.20 and reactance of 0.30. The core requires the equivalent mmf of 100A for magnetization and 50A for core losses Find the primary winding current and ratio error when the ammeter in the secondary circuit indicates 5A. Derive the expression for driving torque and speed of rotation of disc in single phase energy meter. Explain the following terms : ') Creep in single phase energy meter ii) Burden of instrument transformer 6. 7. a) Explain the construction of electrodynamometer type wattmeter. b) i) Explain what do you mean by standardization of de potentiometer. ji) A basic slide wire potentiometer has a working battery of 4 Volts with negligible internal resistance. The resistance of slide wire is 100. and its length is 200cm. A standard cell of 1.018 Volts is used for standardization and the rheostat is adjusted so that balance is obtained when the sliding contact at 101.8cm. The slide wire have 1mm scale divisions and it is possible to read upto one fifth of a division. Calculate : i) the working current and the rheostat setting ii) resolution of the instrument. c) Explain with neat diagram the operation of Drysdale Polar type AC potentiometer. MODULE - IV . a) Explain Hay’s Bridge and draw phasor diagram. Also derive expression for unknowns, b) i) State the law of Inverse Squares and Lamber's Cosine Law. ii) An incandescent lamp having a luminous intensity of 60 Cdin all directions gives an illumination of 15 Lux at the surface of a table vertically below it. Find the distance of the lamp from the table. c) An owen's bridge is used to measure the properties of a sample of sheet steel at 2KHz.
