flexible layer having low horizontal stiffness in between the foundation and the super
structure
Periodic structure is made up of an infinite or finite
repetition of unit cell in one, two or three direction. One of the significant properties of a
periodic structure is that it possesses bands of frequency gaps or attenuation zones. When the
frequency of a wave falls within the range of the frequency band gap of the periodic material,
the wave, and hence its energy, cannot propagate through the periodic material. So, for
practical purposes, if a periodic foundation can be designed using common engineering
materials such as concrete, rubber and steel, it can be used as an effective method for base
isolation.
