developed during religious times
in the 11th century immediately
following the collapse of the
Roman Empire.
How and why was this form
developed?
Romanesque arches were
developed to ensure that the
beauty of traditional Roman
architecture would survive
despite the collapse of the empire.

Stone was an important material
for construction and different
types of stone were used for
different types of structures.
Marble, limestone, sandstone,
basaltic lava and granites were all
utilized during the time period;
however, the arches themselves
were more commonly constructed
of limestone or sandstone (light
and weather resistant).
