Method Statement Open Excavation

Introduction
This method statement outlines the procedures for the construction of footing. Location of
footing is shown in Appendix 1.
Construction Sequence
(A) Excavation
1.

The footings will be excavated and exposed according to the approved excavation plans.
The site formation have been done by previously contractor. The excavation will be open
cut method as the site mainly are bedrock.

2.

The gradient of open cut slope shall be in accordance to approval plan ref. FN/003 Rev.
3. Mainly the gradient is 70 degree maximum.

3.

Excavation sequence to refer Appendix 2.

4.

The works of excavation is carried out by means of backhoe. When large rock boulders
encountered during excavation, it will be broken by heavy duty hydraulic breaker and
then removed by excavators. The excavated materials will cart away off site except
remaining suitable material for backfilling works to the required formation level.

5.

During rock breaking, spraying to be applied for minimize dust pollution.

6.

When the required founding level reached, water cleaning to expose sounded bedrock for
inspection by Resident Engineer.

7.

The bedrock shall be Grade III or better rock in which that it should not be broken by
hand.

8.

Proper fencing will be fence-off the excavated area at ground level.

9.

All soil slope shall be graded and sealed to ensure run-off and to avoid ponding.

10. Open cut soil slope shall be securely covered with plastic sheeting to protect against
wind and rainfall.
11. If trenches on or adjacent to slopes have to be excavated, this shall be done with extreme
care in short sections at a time. Precautions shall always be taken to prevent water from
entering or collecting in the trenches.

12. Temporary sump pits will be excavated and constructed around the lift pit or bottom
level of footing for dewatering. Some ditches will be excavated and link to the sump pits
for the collection of underground water / surface water. The collected underground water
will be drained/ pumped from the sump pits by submersible electric pumps to temporary
site drains leading to sedimentation and waste water treatment plant before re-cycle use
or discharging off-site.
(B) Precautions Against Heavy Rainfall
1.

We shall make use of the temporary site drainage system as constructed by the site
formation contractor to drain off the surface water collected from site.

2.

During construction, modify the site drainage system as necessary to ensure surface
water flowing into the site from uphill shall be intercepted and safety discharged from
the site. At each intersection and abrupt change in direction of surface drainage
channels an accessible catchpit shall be provided. All drainage works shall be kept clear
of debris.

3.

All unprotected partially formed soil slopes shall be temporarily protected by plastic
sheeting, suitably secured against the wind, at the end of each day.
