Yik Yak is continuing to work to ensure all middle school and
high school areas lose access.
Yik Yak has also introduced screen names to cut back on the
anonymity and allow other users recognize those who cyberbully, especially if they are a repeat offender.
Lastly Yik Yak has various hidden features designed to attack
harmful messages and images before they are sent out. The
social app contains a word filter to flag offensive words and
take them down immediately. When these offensive words
are used, the user is reminded that the post could be harmful
and asks if they still wish to post it. If the user continues to
post it, Yik Yak has a second feature to review these posts
and take them down on their own accord. The post is removed instantaneously. Yik Yak has also been given a 17 plus
rating on the App Store, allowing parents to easily block the
app on childrens phones.

CYBERBULLYING
Yik Yak has been very aware of the issue and has since taken
several steps in trying to get Yik Yak back to the original
goal of collectiveness for college aged users and above. The
social apps main goal has been to get the app out of areas
it is not designed for, younger crowds. With the help of an
external company, Maponics, Yik Yak has shut off access
to U.S. middle and high school students across the United
States. Through the use of geofences, unseen online fences,
the application can define borders and disable the app within
these areas. Maponics defines these borders around middle
and high school areas.

CYBERBULLING: A PANDEMIC
THERES BEEN A GLITCH
Cyberbullying is a relatively new issue that our population has been faced with. Cyberbullying, also known as
electronic bullying or online social cruelty, is the use of
information or electronic communication technologies to
bully others. With all the varying social outlets to communicate through online, people have gained a sense of confidence in what they post because of the indirectness of
being online. Many sites even allow complete anonymity,
giving users the ability to be anyone. Site users, especially
those in their middle school and high school years, can
be dangerous when given this much power that does not
have to be taken credit for.
Trolling has become a huge issue as of lately, especially

with sites where anonymity is allowed. This occurs when
a person aims to cause conflict on the Internet by starting
arguments, upsetting people, and posting provocative,
off-topic messages through an online community. Trolling
is done with the intent of causing unrest in readers, as
well as to provoke an emotional response. In recent studies done among middle school and high school students
in the United States, cyberbullying was found to be the
most common form of terrorization. Roughly 34% of
students admitted experiencing cyberbullying in their lifetime. Only 21% of these students who had been bullied,
admitted to reporting the cyberbullying. Many children
are trying to take this on a lone and it is too much. Efforts
of prevention of this issue continues to grow, however
technology changes rapidly and new outlets where students can bully appear constantly.
Yik Yak has been declared the newest application used

to make cyberbullying and trolling more accessible.
The app was designed by two Furman University students, Tyler Droll and Brooks Biffington, with hopes of
connecting their educational community. Yik Yaks goal
was to be a place where students could connect online
and discuss campus news, complaints, issues, and
topics. Through this site, students could discover their
local community, ask questions to fellow students,
offer verbal support and tell jokes.
By using GPS location, Yik Yak determines the users
location and then places them into groups and pockets
of 1.5 mile zones. Any user within the radius can post
and read each others yaks.
Yik Yaks mission is to make the world feel small again.
With instant connection, users can become a stronger
community. Now entering over 2,000 campuses across
the United States, Yik Yak has taken off.

Yik Yak has gained recent recognition in the news,

however not in a positive light. Somewhere along the
way, students lost sight of Yik Yaks goal of love and
community. Being an anonymous site, users have taken
on cyberbullying through the app. Due to the size of
bullying and harassment through the social app, many
school districts have taken steps to ban the use of Yik
Yak in their area. Schools in Chicago, Texas, Vermont,
and Rhode Island are just some of the many to ban use
of the app. Many of the cases found have been within
high school and middle school areas. During these
ages, students are much more emotional and susceptible. Yik Yak is working on getting back to their roots.
Together, this can be stopped.
