III. Baseline Data

At J. Frank Hillyard I have three classes that I teach on a daily basis. In total there are 50 students that I see on a
daily basis. The three different classes are grouped very differently and academically. My first block class has 20
students in it, 13 girls and 7 boys. This class is very high achieving and are very well behaved so there are very little
problems. Third block has 15 students, 9 girls and 6 boys in the class. This group is very intelligent but they do have
some behavior issues on occasion. The forth block class has 15 students, 3 girls and 12 boys. This class is
intellectually lower that the other two classes, have behavioral problems and they seem to work at a slower pace
than the other two classes.
This SAPA will be conducted on cells in seventh grade life science. This small area of my unit should be 7 days long
and seems to be very challenging for students to understand. The students have had most of this information taught
to them before but the depth that we will go into has not been yet covered.
SOL: The student will investigate and understand that all living things are composed of cells. Key concepts include
a) cell structure and organelles;
b) similarities and differences between plant and animal cells;

I teach three classes of 7th grade students.

In the first period class 6 students scored over a 50%, 12 students scored between 20% and 49% and 2 students
scored 19% or below on the cells pre-assessment.
In the third period class 1 students scored over a 50%, 12 students scored between 20% and 49% and 2 students
scored 19% or below on the cells pre-assessment.
In the fourth period class 1 students scored over a 50%, 13 students scored between 20% and 49% and 1 student
scored 19% or lower on the cells pre-assessment.
