Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO
SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES: Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They a) know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They b) know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies c) in a responsible way, d) in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. Brief Description of Evidence: During the time of my 2015 summer semester for my ECED 235 class I had to complete a case study on an individual child while in the child care setting. In order for the completion of this assignment I had to collaborate with my mentor and the parents of my case study individual. I had to do assessments and observations of this child. This also entailed that I work with the parents of the child so that together, we can work on creating end goals and finish the observation of the childs progress with a child assessment portfolio that shows activities that occurred along the way that impacted the childs growth and improvement. Analysis of What I Learned: While completing this case study I was able to work together with the parents and a professional person in the child care setting. I was also able to collaborate with both the parents and the professional in order to set goals for the child by using assessments such as the Creative Curriculum use hands on observation techniques for all domains by using Teacher Observational Rating Scales, observation sheets to see where the student stands in where they should be developmentally, listen to what the student says by observing and concluding observations to track the childs growth over the time spent with them. While working with the child, their parents in the work field I was able to enrich the skills I possess on documentation and observing by using anecdotal notes, observations and assessments along with communicating with the parents. How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard: While completing this project I am able to understand and use positive relationships with parents, children and professionals alike. It shows that I have worked on supportive interactions with for the work that I do with children and families. My case study shows that I know, understand and use many different developmentally appropriate approaches. I am able to positively influence the development of each individual childs learning. With the completion of this project it shows I am able to use different tools to connect with families and children. Through working in a professional setting and using the Creative curriculum first hand I am now able to better assess students using the different domains and set better goals for the student through the observations and assessments taken.
