Problem Based Instructional Task

Lesson Plan 2- An Addition Seminar

Big Idea: Mental math for adding multi-digit numbers
Common Core: CCSS. MATH. CONTENT. 2 NBT. B. 7
I can use mental math to solve problems
Launch: Hello 2nd grade class for math today, you will first be discussing with your group the different
problems on the board and how you got to those answers. Please take a look at the board and discuss each
answer without using your fingers or paper to figure out the answer. (Put the following problems on the board:
199+1=? 12+12+12=? 150+150=? 48+2=?) Okay class, which of these problems seem hard? Why? Which of
these seems easy? (Write the list of why students think the problems are easy). Now students you are going to
get a worksheet to work on with your group. There are multiple ways of getting the answer so if some of your
group members work out the problem in a different way that is great.
Explore: Students work in partners or small groups to solve the problem. We will read the problems together to
figure out what they are asking us to solve. There should be multiple solutions or multiple ways to solve the
problem.

Students will be in groups of four that are two heterogeneous students and two homogenous
students
Key Questions:
o Does your group agree on that answer?
o How could you figure out that answer in another way?
o Can you explain how you got that answer?
o Does the question make sense?
o What strategy did you use to figure out the answer?
Assessment: Can the students explain their answers by explaining how they did mental math in
their head?

Summarize: (Have students put numbers 3 and 5 on the board) Okay class please come to the carpet so we can
talk about todays lesson. I had one group put number 3 on the board. Raise your hand if you agree with their
answer. Can the group who put this problem on the board please talk about how they got their answer. (Have
that group explain their answer) Is there another group that did it differently? Lets look at problem number 5,
raise your hand if you agree with their answer. Can that group explain how they got their answer? (Have the
group explain how they got their answer). Now for your homework, you will be given the Acme Grocery Store
worksheet where you decide how much the item cost between 25 and 90 cents. This worksheet will help
incorporate what todays lesson was about, can anyone tell me what todays lesson was about? Thats right it
was about using mental math to figure out the answer to problems.
Evaluation: Students will be given the Acme Grocery Store worksheet which will show if the students
understand the concept.
Accommodations:
Enrichment: The last problem on the worksheet is the challenge question for students to figure out.
Remediation: Students will be given base-ten pieces to represent numbers and develop their number
sense.
