1. Although having a slight back round knowledge about general
oral health practices will be helpful, this lesson will
accommodate people who do not have any back round
knowledge.
B. Key Vocabulary :
1. Plaque-Plaque is a sticky, slimy substance made up mostly of the
germs that cause tooth decay
2. Cavity- Small holes in your teeth that need to be filled due to
plaque building up on your teeth
3. Mouth wash- Liquid you swish around in your mouth to get rid
of bacteria
4. Floss- Thin piece of material you slide between your teeth to get
rid of bacteria that your toothbrush missed
5. Dentist- Doctor who checks your teeth and gums to make sure they
are healthy and clean.
6. Dentures- False teeth people get when their real teeth have to be
removed.
7. Gums-Soft, pink area in your mouth that holds your teeth in place
C. Big Idea

How to maintain healthy oral hygiene.

D. Content
1. Students will learn to list the steps, in order, to maintain healthy
hygiene. (wet toothbrush, apply toothpaste to toothbrush , brush
teeth, spit out toothpaste when done brushing, and rinse mouth and
toothbrush off)
2. Students will learn the importance of good oral hygiene and the
proper ways to floss. (avoid bacteria and plaque that can cause
cavities.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Teacher will walk in dressed in a lab coat and say,Today
class, we are going to become dentists! First, we must go
through training so that we know about healthy oral
practices! We are going to begin by watching our training
video!
B. Development

1. To go over vocab, students will go on a vocab hunt.

Whenever they hear any of the vocab words ( written on the
board) they will raise their hands and tell the teacher the
definition. Whenever all words are defined, the students will
write the words and definitions in their science notebooks. This
will promote careful listening.
2. We will begin class by watching our training video while
seated at tables in groups of 3.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDZXSMU2lAk
3. While the students are watching the video, they will write one
thing that they learned on the movie note sheet they are
provided with ( see attached).
4. At the end of the video, each student will re-write what they
learned from the movie sheet and write it on a sticky note.
After that have transferred it to a sticky note, they will stick the
note on the board.
5. After every student writes one thing that they learned, we will
read through each of them. This is a great way to ease into the
lesson and introduce new ideas!
6. We will then talk the steps of brushing our teeth while the
teacher demonstrates them on the set of big teeth:
a. wet toothbrush
b. apply toothpaste to toothbrush
c. brush all surfaces of teeth
d. spit out toothpaste when done brushing then rinse
mouth and toothbrush off
7. We will discuss how to floss (take a piece of floss the size of
your arm, wrap each end around your two pointer fingers and
move the floss back and forth between all of your teeth.
8. Students will start their floss inquiry after they learn how to
floss. ( see attached
9. ). Each student will be given three different types of floss. They
must try them all and record their observations about how each
one worked. The goal is for them to remove all of the play-doh,
or plaque from the teeth of the lego.
10. Students will then be told how to use mouth wash. ( Put it in
your mouth and swish it around for 30 seconds then spit it out)
11. Students will then be give 4 pictures to sort. They will be the 4
steps of brushing their teeth. They must put the cards in order.

We will do this as a class. Whenever they are all in order, they

will glue them into their science notebooks.
12. The teacher will continue to recap the importance of teeth
brushing with the students. The students should be encouraged
to say statements such as, Brushing, flossing and using mouth
wash gets rid of bacteria that causes the tooth to become sticky
with plaque, and plaque eats the tooth and causes cavities!
The main focus is that the students understand that good oral
hygiene eliminates bacteria that causes plaque buildup and
cavities.
13. To incorporate a literacy element into the lesson, every student
will be given a tooth template to write the steps of brushing
their teeth. This will be used as an assessment. As the students
are completing this activity, the teacher will be taking
observations on her observation sheet. (see attatched)
14. Each tooth should include the following steps, in order.
a. Wet tooth brush
b. Put toothpaste on toothbrush
c. Brush all surfaces of teeth for about 1-2 minutes
d. Spit out toothpaste and rinse mouth and toothbrush

15. We will then read Clarabella's teeth as a class. This will be a

great way to wind down from the lesson.
16. Students will be permitted to get up and move to a circle on
the floor to read the story.

C. Closure
1. Wow! Who knew I had such great dentists in my classroom! We have learned all
about the proper ways to brush our teeth to help keep them clean and strong.
Tomorrow we are going to learn how to keep our bodies just as strong as our teeth.
2. We will then read Clarabella's teeth as a class. This will be a great way to wind
down from the lesson.
3. Students will be permitted to get up and move to a circle on the floor to read the
story.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation

1. Jebidiah is unable to grip a pencil and write one thing that he

learned during the video due to an orthopedic impairment. He
will be able to verbally state his fact, instead of writing it.
2. To differentiate instruction, students who do not want to work
in table groups may work alone.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative:
a. Students will write the steps of teeth brushing, in order,
on their tooth template sheet. The sheets will be handed
in and graded. The students must have all five steps in
order to receive full credit.
2. Summative:
a. There is no summative assessment for this lesson.

V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
1. How do I ensure the students understood the lesson?
2. What can I do for the next lesson to make it go smoother?

C. Vrombaut, A. (2003). Clarabella's teeth. Clarion Books.
While all her friends are out playing, Clarabella is inside brushing all of
her teeth. She missed out on a whole days worth of activities. Although it
took all day it was worth it because her teeth are healthy and clean. But
her friends help out by giving her a crocodile sized toothbrush. Now she
isn't stuck inside all day brushing her teeth.
