Rabbiqiniadhaabakayaumatubathu'ibaadaka
Translation.'OAllah,savemefromYourpunishmentonthedayofqiyaamah",
Commentary
ItisstatedintheHisnHaseenthatSayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamrecitedthisdu'aa
thrice.Thishasalsobeenreportedby'AbdullahbinMas'udRadiyallahu'Anhuinanarration.Wefind
thatthiswasthegeneralPracticeofSayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallam,whichmany
SahaabahRadiyallahu'Anhumhadwitnessed.AlthoughSayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'Alayhi
Wasallamwassinless,herecitedthesetypesof.du'aas(supplications)toexpresshishumblenessand
bondmanship.Itisproperthatadevotedworshipperasksonlyhiscreator,orthiswasdonetoeducatethe
ummah.Itisclear,fromthishadiththatSayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamsleptonhis
rightside.Thiswashisnoblepractice.Thereforeitismustahabtosleepontherightside.Aspecial
benefitmaybederivedfromthis.Theheartisontheleftsideofthechest,andbysleepingontheright
side,theheartremainsonthetopside.Onewillnothaveadeepsleep,butwillsleeplightly.Ifonesleeps
ontheleftside,theheartwillbeatthebottom,whichwillresultinadeepslumber.Somephysicians
haveforthisreasonsaid,thatitisgoodtosleepontheleftside,becauseifonehasadeepsleep,thefood
digestbetter.Thisisafact.Butthereisaharmtoo,whichhasnotbetakenintoconsideration.Iftheheart
isatthebottom,theweightofthewholebodywillbeonitandthiswillaffectit.Theheartisoneofthe
mainorgansofthebody.Puttingalittlepressureonitmaycausemanydiseases.Therefore,medically
speaking,ifitisgoodtosleepontheleft,thentooitisdetrimental,fromwhichoneshouldatalltimes
takeprecaution.Inthisrespect,fromthemedicalpointofviewitisimportanttosleepontherightside.
Besides,sleepingontherightsideremindsoneofthegrave.Wehavebeencommandedtoremember
deathregularly.Manyworldlyandreligiousbenefitsarederivedbyconstantlyrememberingdeath.One
shouldconstantlyrememberthebreakerofallpleasures.Thefactisthis,howcanoneforgetathingthat
everybeingwillexperiencewhichissuretocomeanditisnotknownwhenitshalltakeplace?

HudhayfahRadiyallahu'Anhusays:"WhenRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamlaydownonabed,
herecited:
Allahurmmabiithmikaamutuwaahyaa
Translation:OAllah!InThynamedoIliveanddie'.
Whenheawakenedherecitedthisdu'aa:
Alhamdulillaahilladhiahyaanaaba'darnaaamaatanawailayhinnushur
Translation:'PraisebetoAllahWhorestoreduntouslife,havingcausedustodieanduntoHimshall
betheResurrection"'.
Commentary
Sleepissynonymouswithdeath.Thatiswhysleephasbeenlinkedtodeath,andwakingwithlife.For
thisreasontoooneshouldsleepontherightside,assleepingisanexampleofdeath.Becausesleepis
likenedtodeath,andwakingupisbecomingaliveagain.The'ulamahavewritten,itisathingthatshould
beponderedupon,that,afterdyinginthismanneronthedayofqiyaamahonewillbegivenlifeagain.In
realityAllah'Ta'aalahasmadethisworldalittlereplicaofthehereafter.Anexampleofeverythinghas
beenmadeinthisworldsothatonemayponderandtakeheedofthingstocome.Thelifeinthisworldis
notmorethanadream.Apersonishappy,affluent,possessingalltypesofluxuriesanddoesnot
experienceanysortoftrouble.Ifthispersonseesinadreamthatheisbeingtakentojailandflogged,
andisexperiencingalltypesofcalamities,notrealisingthatitisadream,heisdistressed,andcryingtoo.
Suddenlytheeyesopenandallthetranquilityandhappinessreturns.Thetroublesofthisdreamdoesnot
remainnorareitseffectsfelt.Inthesamemanner,thisisthestateofapiousperson.Allthedifficulties
thatareexperiencedinthisworld,arelike,adream.Afteropeningtheeyeswhenallthehappinessis
experienced,whateffectshallthedreamhave?Butimaginetheopposite?Ifoneisexperiencingluxuries
inadream,.thenonawakeningonefindsoneselfinjailwithallitspunishments,whattasteshallremain
ofasweetdream?Ifadetaineethatissentencedtohardlabour,seesinadreamthathehasbecomeking
oftheworlds,butafterawakeningfindshimselfchainedinthedarkdungeons,ofwhatbenefitwillthis
kingmanshipbetohim?TheSahaabahRadiyallahu'Anhumunderstoodthis,theypleasantlyenduredall
hardships,rememberingthatthislifeisbutlikeadream.MaytheAlmightyAllahthroughHisInfinite
Mercyalsograntusthisvaluabletreasure.HisMercyiswidespread.

'AayeshahRadiyallahu'Anhanarrates:"EverynightbeforeRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamslept
onhisbed,heputtogetherhishands(asinthedu'aa)andblewonitandrecited(thesurahsof)AI
Ikhlaas(Qulhuwauahuahad),AIFalaq(Qula'udhubirabbilfalaq),andAnNaas(Quia'udhubirabbin
naas)andwipedthosepartsofthebodythathecould(whereverthehandcouldreach).Hebeganwiththe
head,thenthefaceandthenthefrontpartofhisbody.Thiswasdonethrice".
Commentary
TheahaadithstatethatSayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamreciteddifferentdu'aasbefore
hewenttobed.HealsoreciteddifferentsurahsandaayaatoftheQuraan.ItisreportedfromSayyidina
RasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamthatifonerecitesaportionoftheQuraanbeforesleeping,an
angelisappointedtoprotectonetilloneawakens.FromtheabovehadithitisfoundthatSayyidina
RasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamhimselfrecitedthethreesurahsmentioned.Besidesthese,ithas
beennarratedthatherecitedthemusabbihaat.i.e.thosesurahsthatbeginwithSabbaha,Yusabbibu,
Subhaanaetc.HealsoregularlyrecitedtheSurahsof(AlifLaam)SajdahandSurahMulk(Tabaarak).
TheahaadithstatethathealsorecitedtheAayatulKursiandthelasttwoaayahsofSuratulBaqarah.A
sahabireportsthat,SayidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamAdvisedhimtoreciteSuratul
Kaafirun(Qulyaaayyuhalkaafirun)beforeretiringtobed.Besidesthese,otherdu'aashavebeennarrated

thatwerereadbySayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallambeforesleeping.FathulBaari.

Ibn'AbbaasRadiyallahu'Anhureports:"OnceRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamsleptandbegan
snoring.Itwas,thenatureofRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamthathesnored,whenheslept.
BilaalRadiyallahu'Anhugavethecalltoprepareforsalaah.RasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallam
awakenedandperformedthesalaah.Hedidnotperformthewudu".Thishadithhasadetailedincident.
Commentary
ItisapeculiarityoftheAmbiyaathattheirwududoesnotbecomeinvalidbysleeping.Forthisreason
SayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamdidnotperformwudu.SayyidinaRasulullah
Sallallahu'AlayhiWasallaminformedusofthereason.WhentheAmbiyaasleeptheirheartsandminds
donotsleep,onlytheireyessleep.ThedreamsoftheAmbiyaaarealsorevelations.Theyareprotected
fromtheinfluenceoftheshaytaan.TheincidentthatImaamTirmidhireferstotookplaceattheHouseof
theauntofSayyidinaibn'AbbaasRadiyallahu'Anhu.Itwillbediscussedinthefifthhadithofthe
ensuingchapter.Thesubjectwasnotrelevanttothischapter,thereforetheauthoromittedithere.

AnasbinMaalikRadiyallahu'Anhusays:"WhenRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamwenttobed,he
recitedthisdu'aa:
Alhamdulillaahilladhiat'amanaawasaqaanaawakafaanaawaaawaanaafakammimmal
laakaafiyalahuwalaamuwiya
Translation:'PraisebetoAllahWhogaveusfoodanddrink,providedussufficiently,andgaveus(a
placefor)shelter!Howmanytherearewhohaveneitheraprovidernorashelterer!"'
Commentary
ThelawofAllahisthatwhenoneleavesone'sworktoAllah,AllahTa'aalaalsotakescareandfulfils
one'sworkthroughanunknownsource.AndwhosoeverkeepethhisdutytoAllah,Allahwillappointa
wayoutforhim.SurahTalaq,3.
AndthisiscertainlycompletedonSayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallam.Thereforethe
sufficingisofacompletenature.Thereafter,themoreonereliesandhastrustinAllah,somuchmore
doesAllahfulfilone'sneeds.Thishasbeenmentionedinmanyahaadithunderdifferentheadinigs.
Itisreportedinahadith:'Towhompovertyreachesandthatpersonasksthepeopleforrescuefrom
starvation,thenthepersonsneedsarenotfulfilled.Ifoneputsforwardone'srequesttoAllahTa'aala,
thensooninsomewayortheother,thatneedisfulfilled'.InanotherhadithitisreportedthatAllah
Ta'aalasays:"Osonofman.Ifyoufreeyourself(fromallthings)forthesakeofMyworship.Iwillfulfil
yourneedsandfillyouwithrichness(fromallwants).OtherwiseIwillfillyourheartswithproblemsand
Iwillnotletyourneedsbefulfilled".Thosewhowaitfortheirmaterialneedstobefulfilled,sothatthey
canspendtheirtimeforreligiousactivities,shouldtakeheedfromthis.Theonlywaytofulfilreligious
needsistomakeoneselffreefrommaterialneeds,andconcentrateonthepathofAllah.Thedu'aaofthe
abovehadithhasbeenmentionedbySayyidinaRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallamsothatonemay
beremindedtoexpressgratitudetoAllah.ItisimportantthateveryonethankAllahaccordingtoone's
capacity.ThemoreonethanksAllah,themoreonereceivesofHisblessings.AllahTa'aalasaysinthe
Quraan:"Ifyegivethanks,1willgiveyoumore.."SurahEbrahim,7.
AllahTa'aalahasalsocommandedthatoneshouldrememberthosewhoarelessfortunate,sothatthanks
mayemitfromtheheart.Howmanypeoplearethereintheworldwhohavenofoodandarestarving?
Theydonothavesomeonetoaidthemintheirdifficulties.HowgreatisAllahTa'aala'sMercy,thatHe
hasbestoweduponussuchgreatbounties.

AbuQataadahRadiyallahu'Anhurelates:"IfRasulullahSallallahu'AlayhiWasallammadeanearly
joumeybreakinthelastportionofthenightonhistravels,hesleptonhisrightside.Ifhewasstaying
theretillbeforethemorning,heliftedhisrightarm,puthisheadonitandslept".
Commentary
Thereasonbeingthatiftherewasmoretimehelayflatandslept.Hisnoblehabitwastosleeponthe
rightside.Butiftimewasshort,heliftedhisarmandsleptonitforalittlewhile.Insuchcircumstances
hedidnotlieflatandsleep,asthismightresultinadeepslumber,andthetimeforthesalaahwouldpass.
