These questions will be a mixture of textbook questions and general knowledge questions. Beyond this, students will also be asked to work out
worksheet questions in the class as well as to work together as a class to solve questions. This gives students a headstart on the worksheet as
well as clearly showing areas that the student does not understand.

Labs are a critical combination of skills

and knowledge and are an important
part of science as a continued avenue
of learning (be that in university or a

Formative Formal

There will be a number of labs being done throughout the unit (which will be discussed more in depth in that section). One of these will be
submitted as a summative mark at the end of the year. The student will choose which lab report to submit based on feedback given throughout
the course.
There will be several labs covering many of the skills sections of the objectives. These labs will all have a lab report done on them, the outline of
which will be provided by the teacher. Students will be required to work through the sections of the lab and do an analysis section as homework.
Labs will be done as groups, analysis will be done individually.

The lab submission will be worth

A single completion mark will be
given for each lab. This will be worth

Formative Formal

Students will be tasked with using a critical understanding of the important concepts of a topic in order to create a theoretical lab that will be
able to demonstrate these concepts. Students will be asked to design the lab from hypothesis through materials, methods, procedure, and
expected results. Students will be given a range of topics that they are able to cover.

This project will be assessed with

feedback but will not be given
weight in the grade mark.

After a class of review, students will be given a short quiz to work over in the last half of the class. These quizzes will be entirely short answer
and will revolve around a student being able to solve equations given different sets of chemical values. Calculators and periodic tables will be
available for this exam.

Rationale for grading weight

This will be a final at the end of the semester. It will be a small section of multiple choice (pure knowledge questions such as core concepts like
Avogadro's number or "which pH test would you use") but the focus will be on equation solving. Focus will be on understanding the concepts as
opposed to coming up with the correct answer. Given the largely mathematical nature of these questions, there will be a lot of "work being
shown" upon which to mark. Calculators and periodic tables will be available for this exam. This will be part of the focus for students to prove

Grade Weight

This will be worth a large portion of

the unit grade for two reasons.
Primarily, it will be one of the big ways
students will be able to show how
much they learned over the course of
the unit. Secondly this will prepare
them for further heavy wait exams (ie
the diploma)

Rationale of Assessment

This assessment format is important for two reasons. Primarily, this assessment tool can be used to guage where a student is as far as there
capabilities in this format. Secondary to this is that many of the topics covered in this class are based on using the same concepts on different
data sets. Given this, it is important to practice these skills repetitively so that they are able to replicate said skills using any number of data sets
(ie, practice makes perfect). Specifically, these worksheets will be based on formula use and will range in content based on the lesson of the day.
Worksheets will often be partially completed in class as a group, then students will have time in class to finish the worksheet. Any additional
work should be done at home and the worksheet will be expected to be complete by the next day, when it will be collected. Again, practice
makes perfect, and worksheets provide that practice.

There will be two research projects. In both of these, students will be doing research via the internet and the textbook in order to examine some
of the practical applications of the knowledge they have gained throughout the course. Students will be given a formative assessment including
detailed feedback on both of their research projects and then given the opportunity to pick one of the two to submit at the end of the unit. This This research project will be worth

Summative

There will be more details on this assignment in the additional provided materials. As for the rationalization of the assessment, I think that it is
important to include this as a summative assessment for a number of reasons. First, this is the most flexible assignment for students and allows
them full ownership on their knowledge and how they want to demonstrate it. Secondly, I think that this assessment is one that allows all
students to reach a high potential mark regardless of their approach. The actual content of this assignment is also comprehensive of the entire
unit, and therefore allows a student to show their mastery of the entire unit, which is why it should help towards their overall course grade.

Formative Informal

There are countless ways to assess students through informal means. There will a variety used in my class, which can be found here
(http://www.bostonpublicschools.org/cms/lib07/MA01906464/Centricity/Domain/44/Formative_Informal.pdf). I intend to use from this list
assessments that are individual and in groups. For individual, I will use: 3-2-1, exit tickets, muddiest point, and one minute paper. For group, I
will use: Class check, class vote, and learning cell. Most of these are focused on literary skills but can easily be modified into mathematical or
chemistry concepts. The use of other techniques seen in this list are not necessarily going to be excluded, but will be used only as it happens to
come up. The overall goal of these assessments is in order to guage where students are in order to tailor remaining class time to cover areas of
weakness in understanding

These activities are formative and

have no grade weight.

Note on CCCs
In order to save time, I will only write the entire
competency the first time then will refer to it via
code. Not every instance of the CCCs will be covered
every time, but over the course of all assessments
per type they will be covered.
