Summary
Define reaction types, go over reaction
types, go over qualitative vs quantitative
reactions. Ask students in class to solve
some of the questions on the worksheet and
work through sections of the worksheet as a
class. Allow any questions and then allow
students to work on worksheet at their own
pace. Worksheet on reaction types- give the
reactants and require the products. Exit slip
at end of class regarding the five reaction
types. Any issues with exit slip will be
addressed at the beginning of next class
before continuing with the lecture.
Discuss the basics of balancing equations
and work on balancing equations via
worksheets focused on simple balancing of
equations. Students will be asked questions
from the new worksheet and the class will
work through these together. Students will
then have time to work on the worksheet in
class. Students will do a muddiest point
submission on the concept of balancing
equations at the end of the class. Issues
within this assignment will be addressed
before the beginning of lecture next class.
further strengthening of balancing
equations, group work focused. The last
quarter of the class will include a class check
activity
Further cement balancing of equations while
also looking at how to create symbolic
equations out of written explanations and be
able to balance these. An exit slip will also be
included in this lesson at the end regarding
an equation that requires knowledge of all of
the previous lessons. Worksheet will be
larger than previous ones and will be
submitted after the weekend

21-Feb Weekend

Begin to focus entirely on stoichiometric

equations and equation solving on balanced
equations using lecture and worksheets. Exit
slip on end of class.
In class work in groups on a worksheet to
further strengthen basic stoichiometry. End
of class do a class check on the questions.
End class with a 1 minute paper on the key
points of what needs to be done to
stoichiometrically solve an equation
Introduce the concepts of limiting reagents
and apply this to already understood
concepts of stoich. Small worksheet at the
end of class.
Discuss the difference between theoretical
yield and actual yield. Further group work on
fully developed stoichiometry. End class
with another 3-2-1 to prepare the review
period for next class.

Review period for the first half of class

(40minutes) and have a quiz covering all of
the previously covered material for the
second half of the class
First class lab, starting with a safety and
WHMIS understanding review. Do a class
vote excersize on WHMIS as well. Lab focus
on using chemical properties (such as a
flame test) in order to determine the
products of reactions and how this interacts
with balancing equations.
Allow students to go over their lab work
from the day before and do additional group
work together. Class will do a learning cell
looking into different chemical properties
and what to look for after a reaction.
Begin work on the first lab report. BOOK
COMPUTER LAB. Lab report is focused on
working in a group to create a report on how
the previously studied chemistry (stoich) is
used in industry and technology fields and
what effects they have throughout both.

Introduction to quantitative understanding

of acids and bases, emphasizing the titration
curve and choice of pH indicator. Do learning
cell using the textbook to cover different
kinds of indicators and to focus on how to
read titration curves.
ICQ, AIAQ
Do the second lab report of the unit focusing
on creating several titration curves. This will
constitute having a 20 minute instruction
period on using the specific equipment and
then the rest of the period will be focused on
the lab itself. Muddiest point will be
submitted at end of class to learn what
portion of the lab is most confusing to
students
LR, AIAI
Work through more looking at titration
curves in lecture, go over weak points from
yesterday, complete another worksheet.
Exit slip on the end, similar to muddiest
point day before.
ICQ, WS, AIAI

Introduce more advanced concepts involved

in acid base interactions, specifically more
focus on end points and equivalence points,
including what they mean. Students will
work through a worksheet and then
complete a 3-2-1 at the end of the class
Major worksheet to go through in class in
groups. Worksheet will cover the entirety of
acid base interactions. At the end of class,
students will complete a 1 minute paper on
the key concepts of acid-base interactions
Students will do another lab on acid base
interactions. This lab will have two separate
titrations to complete and will require more
in depth analysis than the previous lab
(based on the equivalence and end points).
Class today is dedicated to students creating
their own lab assignment. This assignment
can be done on any of the topics covered in
this unit and should expand beyond the
capabilities of the lab work done in class (ie
they should create an experiment that
couldn't be done in a school setting).

about applying knowledge into determining

and from chemical properties after
reactions. This lab covers information from
both general objectives.
LR

After a class review period for the first half of

the class, there will be a quiz reviewing the
topics covered from 2.5-2.7k and 2.1s.
Introduction of various different methods for
doing chemical analysis (ie more lab
techniques and more technolog that is used
in labs). BOOK COMPUTER LAB. Students
will work in groups in the computer lab to fill
out information about various lab
techniques used in the professional and
Students will do another (Yes) lab like the
one done for objective 2.1s. This will then be
expanded to discuss what other techniques
and information would be derived in a more
advanced lab (sort of like combining minor
elements of the CAL project).
Begin work on inter-curricular project. This
will be done in the computer lab (aka BOOK
COMPUTER LAB) and will be presented in
one week. Students will work in pairs. More
information will be provided in the attached
documentation

create another presentation day for the
project (ie bump other days up one and
move this day to monday next week)
