Learning Plan
Overview
Becoming a nurse has always been my dream career since I was a little girl. I love being
able to help other people get better, and the opportunity to perform or observe fascinating
procedures that can save life. My favorite part about nursing is to be able to educate
patients about their diseases and ways that they can manage it. I believe that education
play an important part in the patient decision making as well as their outcome. However, it
can be overwhelming for the patients to retain all of the information that is being given while
theyre trying to recover from their sickness. Therefore, the patient education handouts are
great resources for the patient to keep and be able to reference to later on when they have
questions about the certain diseases or procedures. My capstone project will be to
organize the patient education handouts, and make sure that the patient will receive the
handouts as needed for certain procedures and diagnoses.

Statement of Purpose:
The purpose of my Senior Capstone project is to improve patient satisfaction, increase
patient safety care and improve patient knowledge about necessary procedures, their
diseases and how to manage it. I believe its important for the patient to be involved in their
care, and decision-making by being provided education information about procedures,
diseases and treatment. Often time as nurses, weve had patients and family confused, and
asking multiple questions related to procedures, and diseases that can take up the time that
the bedside nurses have to be able to meet the demand of other patients. By being able to
provide the patient with proper education along with the handout can clarify many
patient/family questions as well as providing patient options to make decision on how they
want their care to be proceeding.

Description of Activities:
I would like to first start this project with my research about patient education handout, and it
impact on the patient outcome as well as how it can improve patient satisfaction. I believe
that this research is an important step in providing me with background knowledge about
the patient education handouts, it benefits to the patient as well as barrier like how to have
the staff deliver it properly to the patient in a timely manner. In my opinion, the research will
also provide me with strong evidence base practice so that I can show the staff the
importance of providing the handout along with their patient education and be able to
improve the patient outcome and satisfaction significantly. Im hoping to gather some great
useful information from this research to be able to improve our patient care quality in the
unit. Then I will notify the staff about the type of handouts that are available for teaching,
how to obtain the copy of them, and have a dedicate date that the unit will start to use the
handout for the patient teaching material. I will also have the staffs performing audit on the
charting of the handout given to the patient once a week for two months. I also like to
remind the staffs about the patient education handout by sending out notice in their email
once a month.

Evaluation
To be able to measure the patient satisfaction, it will be reflecting on the HCAPPS score
from our quarterly report. To measure the staff compliance with having the patient
education handout as part of their teaching material, I will gather the information from the
staff audits. I will also like to perform a patient survey to see if they feel like their knowledge
is improving with the education handout including with their teaching material.
