Carlisle Architecture A-Day First Period

Problem Statement
The city is considering purchasing a vacant warehouse
in a blighted section of town. The area was once a busy
manufacturing district along a riverfront near the
downtown area. The city would like to convert the
warehouse to a facility that provides a community
service. The goal is to encourage redevelopment of the
area.

Job Descriptions

Joy Aun (Interior Designer, Group Leader): designs floor plans of

the building and is in charge of managing the groups progress and
efficiency

Max Li (Architectural Designer, Note Taker): devises the

construction materials and helps with the floor plan of each room.
He also takes notes at each meeting.

Jada Heredia (Building Inspector, Timekeeper): confirms if the

building follows building codes and keeps time at each meeting

Odelia Lorch (Architect): creates sketches and designs of the

buildings layout and creates a general floor plan

Dealo Mckellar (Health and Safety Engineer): ensures the safety of

all workers and customers.

Leilah Miller (Cost Estimator): determines the budget and figures out
how much the entire building will cost.

Alex Sutton (Site Planner): finds a suitable location of a community

and constructs a floor plan of the original warehouse

Sally Zhao (Energy Consultant): responsible for all energy methods

and conservation

History of Power Plant

Yonkers Power Plant was built between 1904 and 1906.
The purpose of it was to electrify the New York Central
Railroad as a response to the failure of steam powered trains
In 1936, The Power Plant was sold to Edison Light.
In 1963, it was shut down and replaced with modern technology.
Con Edison sold the power station to a private developer in
1978.
There were plans to redesign but the buildings remained vacant.

Design Proposal
We want to redesign the abandoned Yonkers Power
Station Warehouse and turn it into an inexpensive
membership community center. It will feature swimming
pools, ice skating rinks, a cafe, an extensive library, and a
community garden with a marketplace and food pantry,
complete with outdoor movie showings in the
summertime.

Conclusion Questions
1) Why is it important to recognize challenges and barriers during the charrette and then identify
solutions?
It is important to determine solutions to problems because it allows us to construct the best
possible building design that is free of error. This way, we can build effectively and realistically.
2) What is the value of using a charrette to investigate the feasibility and development of a building
project? Describe specific advantages over a traditional approach in which the client meets with an
architect and the architect develops the plan.
Using a charrette is an efficient way to identify the positives and negatives to a building project.
Because it explores the entire design in detail, it is easy to determine what is wrong and could be taken
out of the design, and it also highlights the designs best aspects. The process of having a client consult
with an architect is not as effective as a design charrette because important details can be overlooked if it
s not covered during that one meeting. In addition, certain parts cant be added or removed for the benefit
of the overall project due to the lack of a convenient design layout.

Conclusion Questions
3) Among the ideas or thoughts that you prepared for the charrette, were there any that were
disregarded by the group? Why? Do you think it was the right decision?
While brainstorming ideas for the purpose of the warehouse, we came up with making it a
fitness focused center or a homeless shelter. While those ideas were creative and had a lot of potential,
we all decided as a group to utilize the property with other facilities, not just as a shelter or gym.
4) Identify and explain a potential drawback of the plan your team drafted.
A potential drawback of our plan could be the massive size of the warehouse. It will take an
immense amount of money and labor to renovate the property and utilize all the space. Furthermore, it
will be challenging to come up with a creative but smart set of facility purposes. The wrong
combination of rooms could make the entire complex look weird and even inefficient. Thats why we
spent so much time deciding what to build inside the property.
