GLOBAL WARMING

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

The energy that lights and warms Earth comes from
the Sun. Most of the energy that floods on our planet is
short-wave radiation, including visible light. When this
energy strikes the surface of Earth, the energy
changes from light to heat and warms Earth. Earths
surface, in turn, releases some of this heat as longwave infrared radiation.

GLOBAL WARMING
NECESSITY OF GREENHOUSE EFFECT
All life on Earth relies on this greenhouse effect
without it, the planet would be colder and ice would
cover Earth from pole to pole. However, a growing
excess of greenhouse gases in Earths atmosphere
threatens to trip the balance in the other direction
toward continual warming.

GLOBAL WARMING
TYPES OF GREENHOUSE GASES
Greenhouse gases occur naturally in the environment
and also result from human activities. Greenhouse
gases responsible for Global Warming are:
1. Water vapor
2. Carbon dioxide
3. Methane
4. Nitrous oxide

AIR POLLUTION

Air pollution has been defined by the WHO

as the presence of materials in the air which
are harmful to men and environment. Air
pollutants may be classified as follows: 1.Aersols- Smog, Smoke, Ash, Fumes, Mists
and Dust.
2.Odours This is caused by the presence of
minute particles of pollutants in the ambient
air. They cause nuisance.
3.Gases Sulpher dioxide, Nitrogen oxide,
Ozone, Carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbon,
acids and Fluorine.
