What is Rocket Readers?


Rocket Readers, otherwise known as Title I, is a federally
funded support program
Funding is based on % of free and reduced lunch students
in the district
Qualifying for Title I services is based on academic need,
not free or reduced lunch status
GOAL of Rocket Readers: to provide individualized
intervention and instruction in order to improve early
literacy and reading skills.

How do students qualify for Rocket Readers?


Student recognition of letter names
Fall

13 or less of 52 qualifies
1 minute timed assessment

What does my child do during Rocket


Readers sessions?
Your child works one-to-one with a trained Title I reading
paraprofessional
Research-based reading strategies to support early
literacy development
Large focus on letter names, letter sounds, and
phonemic awareness
Plans are individually tailored to meet the needs of each
student

What does my child miss when they go to


Rocket Readers?
20 minutes of time from regular classroom
Not pulled during lunch, recess, or specials
Students transition quickly back into classroom
activities
Time out of the classroom does not cause students to
fall behind in other areas

How do students exit Rocket Readers?


Multiple measures of growth based on grade level
expectations to include:
Biweekly progress monitoring
Letter Name and Letter Sound fluency goals
Teacher recommendation

What is the Compact Letter?


Notification of qualification
Partnership agreement between teacher, parents, and
students
Legally required to sent to parents to inform about
the program

How can I help my child at home?


Read to & with your child daily
Pay attention to letters, sounds, & words all around you
Praise your childs reading progress
Reinforce reading strategies taught at school (packet)
Early Literacy Resource Site

Family Involvement & Communication


Donuts for Dads (late fall)
Muffins for Moms (spring)
Monthly communication from classroom teacher
Coordinators are available to meet 1-1 to discuss
strategies and tips for at-home supportt home
