Running Head: Curriculum Map

Benjamin 2

The below standards are used at Rhodes Junior High in the Mesa Public
School District. I am currently in a 7th grade math classroom with two
periods of 20 students in the accelerated math program. All of my
students are at varying levels in their academic abilities and I have a
student who is visually impaired and requires an aid throughout the day.
He also has an aid that is visually impaired as well that comes in to assist
during math.

Sleep:
8.EE.8.5
Objective: Students will be able to determine the relationship between
two factors using a graph.
Materials: On-going homework: chart to track sleep
Article on sleep: http://www.aasmnet.org/articles.aspx?id=659
Students will be looking at data related to the amount of sleep a person
gets on average, and their academic performance. Prior to the mini
lesson, students will be asked to record the amount of sleep they get each
night as a continuous homework assignment. After two weeks, we will
take their data and create a chart to show the relationship between the
amount of sleep they received to their academic performance during
those two weeks. After the students have graphed their data, we will
compare their individual data to that of the rest of the class, and look at
what research suggests/studies have shown. Students will be learning
how the relationship between the amount of sleep they get and their
academic performance is proportional. This will all incorporate why sleep
is important to their overall academic performance.

Nutrition:
8.W.2
Objective: Students will be able to write an informational essay using
textual evidence.
Materials: Varying articles/research on the effect of nutrition on academic
performance.

Students will be reading about how nutrition affects academic

performance. They will read multiple resources and look at research that

supports this claim. They will then write an essay, using evidence from
multiple sources, informing parents or students why/how a healthy,
nutritious diet can increase academic performance.

Sustainability:
8.SP.A.1
Objective: Students will be able to create a scatter plot by examining
data.

Materials: Data on solar panel use from around the world.

Students will be looking at data related to sustainability. They will be
specifically looking at data on the amount of energy solar panels create I
different places around the world. As they learn about how solar panels
work and their pros and cons, they will use a scatter plot to graph the
number of solar panels to the amount of money people can save on
energy and how much energy is produced per solar panel in multiple
countries.
