RATIONALE
HTSB Standard 7: Planning for Instruction
Part I: Describe a teaching artifact that represents the overall HTSB standard
Teaching Artifact: UDL Lesson Plan
Course: Foundations of Inclusion in Student Teaching (ED 284)
Teaching Artifact Description: Candidate uses the provided curriculum materials and content
standards to identify measurable learning objectives based on target knowledge and skills.
Teaching Artifact Results: Using the provided template for the UDL Lesson plan, I created a lesson
plan for students who have never been employed. The title of the lesson was Job Application Process for
Students Who Have Never Been Employed. Upon successful completion of the unit, students will
prepare resume, cover letters, letters of application, thank you letters and conduct mock interviews.

Part II: Connect teaching artifact to a sub-standard and assess your proficiency
7.1 Candidate identifies measurable and meaningful learner outcomes.
Connect the teaching artifact/assignment with standard
language: I used the provided curriculum materials and
content standards to identify measurable learning objectives
based on target knowledge and skills. The unit had
students meet the following state standards: CTE.9-12.2.6
Gather and prepare documents related to job-seeking
LA.12.4.1Write in a variety of grade-appropriate formats.
functional writing including college and job applications
LA.12.4.2Use knowledge of sentence structure,
grammar, punctuation, capitalization. And spelling to
produce grade-appropriate writing in standard English

Self-Assessment (Use the course assignment rubric as your guide):
Rubric Example:

Assignment Checklist (200 points)

Identify at least 3 lesson objectives from standardstoolkit.k12.hi.us from 2 or
more different content areas. (20 pts)

Clearly describe components of lesson using UDL lesson builder template:

http://lessonbuilder.cast.org (40 pts)
Addresses a central concern/issue that is specifically relevant to the community of
learners (20pts)
Include 3 modifications/ accommodations based on hypothetical IEPs, IFSPs,
504s. (60 pts)
Create 3 types of assessments to measure learning objectives.
(60 pts)

I attempted to include each element called for on the rubric. I lost a 40 points from my score
from my professor and the following comments: Excellent job on the UDL lesson. This entailed
a lot of details for one lesson, but you did a very thorough job. You included a relevant topic,
addressed objectives multiple content areas, used appropriate modifications and you clearly
described the procedures for implementing the lesson. The final component was to provide
alternative assessments. In other words, can you offer more than one way for students to
submit a final product? Perhaps you could have them choose between typing the resume on
the computer and even providing a partially completed template for students with learning
disabilities. Based on the feedback, I did not fully met the requirements of the assignment, but have
met the standard. The substandard called for me to use the provided curriculum materials and
content standards to identify measurable learning objectives based on target knowledge and skills. I
do meet this portion of the requirements. The area for improvement was to develop three types of
assessments to measure learning objectives. I needed to provide different ways for students to
submit work.

Evidence that supports self-assessment (include student samples/data where appropriate)

Example of artifact:

Part III: Improve your proficiency for the HTSB standard

7.1 Does candidate identifies measurable and meaningful learner outcomes?
Research Findings:
Implementation of findings (please describe or demonstrate a specific example):

According to Dr. Combs, my lesson was good, but it would be beneficial provide multiple ways
in which students could submit work. This would help students who have dyslexia for example.
They may have a hard time with text oriented assessment, so having a partially filled out resume
cold help them.

Since I am not teaching this term, I wanted to research alternative assessments for students. One
article I found was very helpful. They used the example of dyslexia. Since I have mild dyslexia, it
was very interesting to see the options for assessments. These options could be used for other
issues students might have. According to the article, The majority of dyslexic students require
extra time in timed exam situations because of their slow information processing skills. While
many of the alternative forms of assessment will not require extra time, others will, e.g. multiple
choice web-based exam. It is important that extra time is built in as a reasonable adjustment to the
allocated time (Edinburgh Napier University, 2014). Below are 35 alternative assessments
suggested:
1. Oral
2. Home exam (14 days open book)
3. Poster exam (individual or group)
4. Group presentation
5. Individual presentation
6. Written assignment
7. Reflective journal
8. Diary
9. Research project (mini)

10. Portfolio
11. Exhibition
12. Demonstration
13. Short answer questions
14. Performance task (individual or group) - e.g. create a product
15. Multiple choice
16. Case study - problem solving model
17. Case study - patient support
18. Cross subject holistic case study or project, e.g. nursing and comp. therapies
19. Debates
20. Brochures
21. Advertisements
22. Annotated bibliography
23. Editorial
24. Diagnosis of condition
25. Critique (artistic, literary, political environmental, social etc)
26. Reflective essay
27. Magazine article
28. News or feature story
29. SPSS and or other graph (interpretation and representation of information)
30. Review of article or other piece of literature or exhibition, display
31. Web page design
32. Website evaluation (accuracy, current, reliability, authority)
33. Research paper
34. Research proposal
35. Smaller tasks related to written coursework such as - thesis statement where author's view is
expressed

I went to youtube.com to see what I could find about alternative assessment. There
were thousands of examples. The following video was very helpful in suggesting ten
options for alternative assessment.
