Mentoring Minnows Committee for Students That

Are At-Risk
Ensuring that every student will graduate from St James High
School with the skills to attend college with No Remediation.
Meetings are first Thursday of each month in Room C-126 and as
deemed necessary by the committee

Guidance Representative: Lauri Wood

Purpose of the Committee


Identify students who are at risk of failing one or more
classes that will prevent graduation or promotion to the next
grade level.
o Students will be identified from interim grades as well
as quarter grades with the help of the guidance
department and data quality clerk.
Provide support for those students by meeting with them
individually and encouraging them to attend after school
tutoring to improve their grade.
o Transportation will be provided on Wednesdays for
those needing it.
Check in with students periodically to ensure that they are
still on track to graduate and their coursework has improved.
Recognize students who are not typically recognized for
achievement at the Swim Forward Awards.
o Students have to be nominated by one of their teachers
by showing improvement in their coursework.
o The students and their families are invited to attend an
awards ceremony that recognizes those students as

well as provides a catered meal for them as a reward


for their hard work.
o The awards ceremony will be held in February for the
fall semester and May for the spring semester.
Provide positive reinforcement through the implementation
of a TAG Program.
o Students who are observed doing something good or
helping someone or going out of their way to assist
someone, can be tagged by a teacher.
o The student will receive a card which they can put into
a drawing to win free tickets to a sporting event. Two
drawings will be held each month.

Support Services/ Incentives That the Committee Provides


Financial Aid Workshops
o Representatives from CCU and HGTC will come out to
the school and assist students filling out the FASFA and
other pertinent financial aid information.
TAG Cards
o Students are recognized for positive behavior as well as
performing acts of kindness.
o Cards can be turned in an students will be entered into
a drawing to win free athletic event tickets.
Good News Notes
o Encourage teachers to send home good news notes for
students who are doing exceptionally well in their
classes!
o Typically teachers only reach out when students are
misbehaving.
EOC Review Sessions
o Hold review sessions in the cafeteria or various
classrooms for classes that have EOC exams.

o Content area teachers will volunteer to tutor these


sessions to help students prepare for the EOC Exams.
Invitation to Tutoring
o Have postcards or business cards that teachers can
give to students with tutoring information on them.
o They will serve as invitations that are discrete to
students so they will not feel like they are being
singled-out.
