Homework Assignment 4

Due Date: April 10, 2016

IE 673 Total Quality Management (eLearning)
1. Discuss the eight principles of the ISO 9000 standard
Customer Focus analyze and understand the customer to meet their expectations.
Leadership provide the best environment to involve and promote employees to achieve
the objectives.
Involvement of People will add value using the abilities of employees.
Process Approach will give you the ability to manage activities and resources better.
System Approach to Management contribute to be effective and manage as a system.
Continual Improvement should be permanent objective to improve products and system.
Factual Approach to Decision Making focus on the most accurate, relevant and reliable
data and information.
Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationship will be benefits to each other with resources
and knowledge results in value.

2.

Discuss Pareto Charts

According to the textbook pareto charts are very useful for having separated the important
data from the trivial data. This type of chart is important because they can help to decide
where to focus your limited resources. This data will be arrayed along an x and y axis
table.

3.

Discuss fishbone diagrams

Fishbone diagram is call like that because that is what it looks like but it is the Cause and
Effect Diagrams. This diagram is not based on statistics and is just a means of visualizing
how the various factors affected the output of the process.

4.

Discuss histograms

According to the textbook histograms have to do with variability. There is two common
type of data, the attributes and variable data. Histogram is a measurement scale across
one axis and a frequency on the other axis.

5.

Discuss control charts for variables

According to the textbook control chart is a sophisticated outgrowth, can be very powerful
and effective for the tracking and control of processes, and is fundamental to the
improvement of processes. But does not help us understand whether the variation is the
result of special causes or common causes that are purely random. This chart is part of
the seven total quality tools.

6.

Discuss flowcharts and give a simple example

A flowchart is a graphic representation of a process, (textbook definition). The textbook

said Flowcharts are used in a total quality setting for charting the inputs, steps, functions,
and outflows of a process to understand more fully how the function works and who or
what has input into and influence on the process, its inputs and outputs, and even its
timing. Flowcharts is part of the five-s quality tools.

7.

Explain what is an FMEA?

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) you can used to identify all possible product or
process failures and prioritize them for elimination according to their risk. FMEA can set
in motion action to eliminate or reduce the probability of their occurrence. Because is an
analytical tool, not a problem solver, FMEA cannot by itself bring about this happy ending
in any situation but it will help you point to the problems that must be solved through the
use of the other tools. The simplicity of FMEA is try to identify all the possible failures that
could happen to any product or a process before they happen, so will help you to avoid
failures.

9.

Explain a total quality decision making process

According to the textbook decision-making process is a logically sequenced series of

activities through which decisions are made. Exist various models and all of them involve
the following step illustrated on the figure below. Decision making is the process of
selecting one course of action from multiples alternatives and/or models to solve a
problem. Any decisions should be evaluated by results and by the process used to make
them real.

Identify or
Anticipate the
Situation

Gather the Facts

Consider Alternatives

Monitor and Adjust

10. Explain why quality tools are important

Total quality tools are because make task easy enough for anyone. Can be very easy to
read, analyze and understand the process. Their use will ensure better decision making,
better solutions to problems, and even improvement of productivity and products and
services for the customers.

Toyota Adds 331,000 Cars To Takata Airbag Recalls

This article talk about an airbags recalls from Toyota. They have 331,000 recalls and
more than 60% are in United State of America. Toyota said Takata airbags can inflate
with too much force and spew shrapnel into the vehicle. Ten deaths worldwide have been
blamed on the problem. This is a big problem of quality because according to Toyota
they had the same problem with previous years of the same models.

Danny,

I did this article as well and find it horrible how Toyota has handled not only solving this
problem but through the media as well. They seem like they are avoiding the fact that
they are partially responsible for these injuries and deaths from the airbags exploding.
The other thing is they have taken so long to be proactive to fix this problem. Somebody
I know has one of these vehicles and got a letter a year or two ago stating there was a
recall for their vehicle. It said in the letter do not have people sit in the passenger seat of
the car as this problem may occur. You would think that with such a serious problem,
they would have the parts available within a month do the recall. Well it was just brought
to my attention 2 days ago for her to bring the car in to complete the recall process and
replace the airbag, Then when she called to schedule an appointment to fix it, they said
they didn't have the parts in to do the recall and it would take ano0ther 2 weeks to order

them. Why would you send a letter to have people come in and do the recall if you do
not have the parts? This is poor quality customer service. You tell people not to use their
passenger side seat for a year or so, then you don't have the parts to do the job when
you send the letter to have people come in and get it fixed? This may be something that
damages Toyota's reputation with the way they handled this process and how long they
let Takata airbags exist in their cars.

These kind of problems are happening a lot lately, not only in Toyota, also in other famous
brands. Is sad that they did not found that problem before, because they could save a lot
of life. If they knew that the same problem happened years before, they should check and
try those air bags couple of times before selling. I hope that the people responded and
check their cars so they can prevent more accidents.

Article 2 - Assignment 4 - Printer, washer automatically order from Amazon

Printer, washer automatically order from Amazon

This article talk about how Amazon making partnership with other companies to get the
most quality and perfect service for people. Here the author said that Brother printer
models will track their toner usage and consumption patterns and then if the user has
selected the service automatically order more from Amazon when levels dip. The
other amazing thing is Gmate SMART blood glucose meter will be able to automatically
order test strips via Amazon. And the other one is really good when talk about wash
clothes and is Whirlpool washer also syncs to Amazon Dash replenishment. The machine
is connected to the replacement service and prompts users to order more detergent when
it is running low, or orders for them.

This is great example of how to use the technology to track things that can help you not
losing time and money and your company

Danny,

This is a great customer service system that they have in place. People who buy these
products have a great tool at their hands. This saves so much time and frustration that
come along with each of the examples you provided. I can say personally from running
a small business, such examples like ordering new toner when low because they can
track the usage patterns as well as detect electronically when ink is low. This is a great
tool for someone like myself because I can not tell you how many times I was in the middle
of preparing an important quote or document that needed to get done that day and ran
out of ink and had to go out to get ink at a department store. The work still gets done, but
it takes an hour of your day to take the ink out go to the store, hoping they have your
model, come back, realign your printer, etc. But with such a high technological system in
printers, they can really improve work efficiencies. The other example are great as well
like with the detergent as it can save time at home as well.

Definitely a great service Danny by Amazon who is trying to make buying household
consumables as seamless and frictionless as possible beginning this March by launching
what it calls a "replenishment" service. Imagine the day your house automatically orders
whatever you're running low on. A printer, a washing machine and a blood glucose
monitor are the first three products that will be included in this service. These products
will track their usage and consumption patterns and then, if the user has selected the
service, automatically order more when needed. The truly magical experience is that it
arrives on your doorstep just when you need it. The brands to take advantage of these
facilities are the famous GE, which will incorporate this service in their washer that will
automatically buy its own laundry detergent. The user fills a reservoir in the washer with
detergent and then the machine monitors how many loads of laundry has been done,
ordering more from Amazon when it's about out and the Gmate SMART blood glucose
meter will be able to automatically order test strips via Amazon.

This is a great way of making, the iterative process of ordering household consumables
easy going and this way the customers dont have to worry about refilling important stuffs
that can cause problems if not present when needed.

First Solar Sells 500 Megawatts of Power to California Utility

This article talk about the biggest U.S. photovoltaic-panel producer, signed contracts to
supply 500 megawatts of capacity to the Southern California Edison utility. This company
is First Solar Inc. that expected to complete the project by the end of 2019 and will be the
largest single buyer of solar power for California. This is a great new that help the
environment been greener than others States. I hope New Jersey and New York start
adopting this type initiatives.
