Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)

MAFS.K.NBT.1.1- Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and
some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or
decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these
numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or
nine ones.
MAFS.K.OA.1.1- Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images,
drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or
equations.
MAFS.K12.MP.5.1- Use appropriate tools strategically.

Objectives- What are you

teaching?

1. Given a decomposing worksheet, students will be able to input numbers in the

part-part-whole circles to correctly answer an addition equation.
2. Students will be able to make connections of number equations when asked to fillin a decomposing worksheet.

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have
mastered your objectives?

Students will be given precise instructions on what to do with the worksheet and
materials given to them. We will start the lesson by going over a few examples of how to
decompose numbers using the part-part-whole format as a group. I will use this time to
pinpoint specific students who struggle with the concept. They will be observed
throughout the lesson by myself, my CT, and a paraprofessional. I will be making my own
observational notes on the students for a later analysis. They will also
Once they have shown that they understand the concept of part-part-whole while using a
circle diagram, they will be given a larger decomposing diagram to write their own
number combination. Each student will also be evaluated based on their completed
worksheet. The instructor should look for incorrect equations, as well as their knowledge
of combination patterns.

Lesson Implementation
Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be
thorough. Act as if you needed
a substitute to carry out the
lesson for you.)
Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
How will materials be
distributed?
How will students
transition between
activities?
What will you as the
teacher do?
What will the students do?
What student data will be
collected during each
phase?
What are other adults in
the room doing? How are
they supporting students
learning?
What model of co-teaching
are you using?

Students will clean up their stations during Daily 5 and meet at the
learning carpet for their math lesson. The instructor will review their
knowledge of part-part-whole decomposing of numbers using a
square board and small beans.
They have used these manipulatives beforehand and should be able
to use them effectively. The instructor will call on the students to
make combinations.

Teacher
The instructor will now introduce the circle decomposing board and
practice making combinations by placing the beans in the circles
and copying their combinations onto the worksheet.
Teacher
Students will be dismissed to their seats and the instructor will hand
them a circle diagram and their worksheet.

They will start using the beans to make combinations for numbers
7, 8, 9, or 10. They will then write each combination in a circle. They
will need to fill out 12 circle formations.

Teacher

The instructor will walk around and approve the worksheet for each
student. If they have completed the worksheet without error, they
will be asked to choose a combination to write in black marker onto
their decomposing board.

bulletin board.
Meeting your students
needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?
Many of the students in the class exclaimed that their parents cook with beans and they
often play with them as they cook. I thought they would be a good manipulative because
they can count the beans just as they do in the real world. This gives them an
opportunity to apply what they have learned.

Differentiationbased on
the needs of your students
how will you take
individual and group
learning differences into
account.

Based on the needs of my students, I have prepared extra help for them during the
lesson. One of my students I prone to outbursts and disruptions but excels and enjoys
math. I planned on the paraprofessional helping him as she does everyday of the week.
The students who have trouble grasping the concept of decomposing numbers, I will ask
them to use a smaller whole number, such as 7,6, or 5.
