Giselle Fagundes Draper and Sky Arviso-Yazza

Origin of Virginity
The concept of virginity has origins tied to when women were considered property.
Women were/are often sold or traded by their family to their husbands for money
or goods.
Virginity was only used to describe an unmarried woman.
The term virgin also meant a free woman as in a woman that was not yet
owned by her husband
The very word virgin derives from a latin root meaning strength, force, The
original Aramaic the word 'virgin meant 'maiden or 'young women, with no
connotations of sexual chastity.
It is believed that Christians interpreted the word virgin differently after it was
believed that the unmarried woman Mary gave birth to Jesus. She was still
seen as clean, pure and untouched.
