How do we use a Cartesian Plane?

We use something called PLOT POINTS
ed
Pairs
They look Like this (2, 6) or (-9, 3) or (8,
-7) or (-4, -5)

How to read Ordered Pairs

Each number in each Ordered Pair represents
where it should go on the Cartesian Plane.

Example:

This number is
how many you
should count
along the

X-axis

(5, 6)

Now you
try..BATTLESHIP!
You and a partner will play the game
Battleship!
Rules:
Each player will have 5 ships as shown here

You may place your ships anywhere in

Quadrant 1 of the Cartesian Plane.
You CANNOT have ships overlapping.
Plays must call their shots by properly
reading an Ordered Pair.

Translations
Translation means to simply move a shape
from where it is to another place on a
Cartesian Plane while keeping in mind the
following:
The objects
shape is not
altered in any
other way.
It is not rotated,
reflected or resized.
Every point of
the object must
be moved in the
same direction

U = Up
R = Right
L = Left

Reflections - TIPS
When completing Reflections, pay attention to the
Line of Reflection (LOR). This is also called the Mirror
Line.

The
Reflection
Line can be
both
Vertical and
Horizontal!

Reflections - TIPS
When completing Reflections, you rewrite the plot
point labels with an . The apostrophe ( ) shows
that the point labeled has been reflected.

one point was
labeled A,
then it would
be rewritten

Complete the following handout.
Be sure to:
Identify the shape above the graph.

Eg.

HIJ
Identify the LOR using an arrow.

Eg. LOR
Identify the reflected points using an ( ).

A A
Identify the reflected ordered pairs.

Eg. D= (3, 9)

Now, lets combine the two

Using the grids provided complete the following
steps:
1. Create a triangle or quadrilateral of any shape or
size.
2. Identify the coordinates for all the points used.
3. Complete a single translation with each shape. Be
sure to identify the translation by using arrows
4. Then complete a single reflection with the
translated shape. Be sure to identify the LOR!

Rotations last one

A Rotation is when a shape is rotated or spun
around a single point on a Cartesian Plane.
Note: even though the shape may spin,
the points will always remain the same
distance to the center rotational point.

his is called the

Point of Rotation
(POR)

Rotations last one

The way we describe the POR is
very similar to the LOR.
Eg. POR (5, 5)

Rotations last one

Sometimes the POR can be
located in the shape that is
rotating.
Eg. POR (5, 5)

Rotations last one

When describing Rotations, we can identify how far a
shape spins by writing turn, turn, turn,
etc.

turn = 90 degrees
turn = 180 degrees
turn = 270 degrees

Rotations Lets practice

Homework
Use the Cartesian Plane sheets provided to answer the
following questions.
1. Use any shape you choose, create 3 CW rotations
where the POR is located OUTSIDE of the shape.
2. Use any shape you choose, create 3 CCW rotations
where the POR is located INSIDE of the shape.
3. Using any shape you choose, complete 2 rotations
with the following:
. They can either be CW or CCW rotations. (identify
which)
. Show the , , and rotations for each.
. Each rotation will be draw using a different color
