Renovation plan:

Main Elementary is a small Elementary school in Rome, Georgia with only 283 students. The
school is an older, but well-kept school. This allows for many changes, but also some challenges
as some of the book shelves are unable to be moved. The school was also newly rewired with
internet, limiting the spaces to move the technology. After speaking with the media specialist,
she expressed her concern about the location of the computers. She said that motoring could
become a problem for students facing away. She also wished that there was more tables for small
groups to meet. She expressed that the Special Education department was using the media center
more this year, so a spot was needed away from the story and Smart board area. After talking
with the Media Specialist and looking over the media center, I came up with some ways to
hopefully help.

I moved the computers to the back wall side by side. This allows for a clear view to each
computer from most places in the media center. Moving the computers also would create
more usable space for a class. Having them horizontal instead of in groups would allow

for teacher help when doing research. This also saved a good deal of space.
I was not able to move all of the book shelves, but the teacher resources shelves could be
moved into the resource room. After looking in the supply and resource room, I realized
that there would be plenty of room to put those two resource shelves in the room. This
cleared up so much space to make the media center easier to navigate. Having all of the
teacher resources together will also help to organize the resources and hopefully make
them more usable.

Moving the teacher resources frees up space to separate the tables and put two rectangle
tables where the shelves were. This will help with the needed area for small groups and
an extra spot for a class. The class sizes are small at Main Elementary, which helps to be
able to divide the tables more. I also added another table to the rug in the Nonfiction
Biography sections. This table could be used small group. Media centers need to have

flexible learning spaces (Sullivan, 2011)

Moving the rectangular tables, allowed me to space out the circular tables away from the
computers some and gave the story and interactive Smart board more space. In the article,
The School Library, it is stated that space is needed to separate activities that interfere
with each other (WBDG Staff, 2014). This happens when students are on the computers
and students are working at the tables.
