Determination of Zinc in Hydrochloric Acid Pickle Solution.

Apparatus:
0-50 mls burette.
2 ml pipette or suitable auto-pipette.
250 mls conical flask.
250 mls plastic bottle with secure screw cap.
Reagents:
0.1M EDTA solution.
Buffer solution. (Add 142 mls of concentrated ammonium hydroxide to 17.5 g of
ammonium chloride and make up to 250 mls.)
Eriochrome black T indicator solution. (Dissolve 0.2g of the dyestuff in 15 mls of
triethanolamine and 5 mls of absolute alcohol.)
Method:
Pipette 2 mls of pickle solution into a 250 ml plastic bottle. Add 40 mls of distilled water.
Add 10 mls of buffer solution. The mixture will turn green. Cap firmly and shake for a
few minutes. The mixture will slowly turn orange. At intervals open the bottle to allow
ingress of air. Continue to shake the bottle until the orange precipitate of iron(III)
coagulates and settles.
Filter through a fluted paper into a conical flask and wash the precipitate with distilled
water. The solution should be clear, if not then re-filter through the precipitate.
To the clear solution in the flask, add one or two drops of eriochrome black indicator
solution and titrate against 0.1M EDTA solution. The end point is wine red to blue.

Calculation:
Concentration of zinc in g/L = (mls of 0.1M EDTA)*(6.538)/(sample mls)

Half quantity titration for strong zinc solutions. (above 100 g/L)
