ETHICAL DECISION MAKING

What is Decision Making?

Decision making is the process of selecting a course of

action from multiple alternatives. A decision is made when a
final choice is made. The act of choosing one out of many
alternatives is called decision making.
The Decision Making Process involves the following six

steps:
Define the Problem
Identify Alternative Solutions to the Problem
Evaluate the Identified Alternatives
Make the Decision
Implement the Alternative
Evaluate the Decision

ETHICAL DECISION MAKING

Ethical Decision Making is different from the

general process of decision making because it

adds additional filters to some of the 6 steps
discussed earlier. These additional filters are
meant to see whether there is an ethical
component to the decision making process or
not. These filters are defined as PLUS, which
stands for two things. Firstly, being additional
points to check in the decision making
process, they are termed as plus. Secondly,
PLUS stands for four distinct filters as follows:

Policies Is the decision consistent with the

organisations policies?
Legal Is the decision acceptable under the

existing laws and regulations?

Universal Does the decision conform to the

universal principles adopted by the organisation?

Self Does the decision satisfy the managers

personal definition of right, good and fair?

The PLUS filters in ethical decision making are

added to steps 1, 3 and 6 of the following 6

steps:
Define the Problem (PLUS)
Identify
Alternative Solutions

to

the

Problem
Evaluate the Identified Alternatives (PLUS)
Make the Decision
Implement the Alternative
Evaluate the Decision (PLUS)

ETHICAL DECISION MAKING

The PLUS filters are used by the managers to

determine whether the ethical components of

any decision are being satisfied or not.
PLUS filters do not by themselves guarantee

an ethical decision. They only ensure that the

ethical components of the situation are
considered in the decision making process.
