Generation Adaptable
Some view millennials as weak. Others view us as overly sensitive. But what
they dont understand is that we are adaptable. Being overly sensitive
towards a subject in itself can be considered weak; but why cant it be
considered as compassionate? Solicitous? Empathetic? Although the media
only shows subjects that are harsh teen suicide for example the empathy
behind the responses are genuine, because they are coming from millennials
as well. A reason why there might be so much more teen suicide in this
generation may be due to how much harsher and evil the world has become.
Do not blame it on us being overly-sensitive; blame it on the world being
overly-cruel. As generations begin to change, prior ones must evolve in order
to keep up with how the world is changing. And for millennials, sympathizing
is a way we must adapt to our society in this time and age. For the
generations before us, keep in mind that you too had to evolve after war; to
have thicker skin and a stronger mindset thirty+ years ago. For us, we must
stand together by all means possible, and if that means we must show
empathy to make us connect with each other better as a generation, and
prevent tragedies like suicide, cyber-bullying (which is harder to escape than
people let on), and racism by all means, we will. People say millennials grew
up overly sheltered by their parents, yet we grew up less sheltered than
most generations due to technology. Technology has been in our lives since
we were young and has shown us things people our age should not have had
to see yet. But this is not always a bad thing, because being exposed to
these certain events makes us realize we have to be strong in this world and
can even make us reflect on our morals as a person. For example, seeing a
mass murder on the media affects our generation by making us stand up for
those who need standing up for. Terrorism against countries open our eyes to
see that there are bigger problems in the world, while also opening our
hearts to sympathize with those who are struggling outside of our country.
Millennials have done more than just be overly-sensitive. We have lead
campaigns and have shined light on things that have needed exposure. The
#BlackLivesMatter epidemic has made society come closer together to work
for equality, and the same has happened with feminism. We strive for
equality for all, which Generation-X has not attempted to do. But not just
equality, we have protected our own kind with exposing the severeness
behind rape culture. In the past, rape was considered inevitable and faulted
by women and the way they carry themselves. But now, society has a better
as much. By us growing and adapting in our own way we feel that we are just as
superior as previous generations. We worked together as a group to write the
response article, meeting outside of class to write it together. Everyone pulled their
weight in some aspect of the project.
