ELEMENTARY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teacher Candidate: Brooke Spence & Cortney Sensenig

Cooperating Teacher:
Group Size: 24

Date: 2/25/16

Coop. Initials:
Allotted Time: 45 mins.

Subject or Topic: Genetic Review

Grade Level: 4th

Section:

Standards:
3.1.B.B1 Explain that the information passed from parents to offspring is transmitted by
means of genes which are coded in DNA molecules. Explain how mutations can alter
genetic information and the possible consequences on resultant cells
3.1.4. B5 Distinguish among observed inheritance patterns caused by
several types of genetic traits (dominant, recessive, codominant, sexlinked, polygenic, incomplete dominance, multiple alleles)

3.1.4.B1 Describe features that are observable in both parents and their offspring
3.1.4.B5 Distinguish among observed inheritance patterns caused by several types of
genetic traits (dominant, recessive, co-dominant, sex-linked, polygenic, incomplete
dominance, multiple alleles)

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

A. The fourth grade students will be able to explain the components of
genetics by correctly answering the questions from the review
game.
II. Instructional Materials
A. PowerPoint with questions
B. Two teams of students (12 on each team)
C.
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline
of additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills

1. Students should have an understanding of what

genetics/DNA is.
2. Students should have an understanding of what
inheritance is.
3. Students should have an understanding of what traits
are.
4. Student should have an understanding of what diversity
is.
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Gene- a tiny section of a chromosome
2. DNA- (deoxyribonucleic acid), long, spiral-shaped molecules found
inside every cell
3. Double Helix- the twisted ladder-like structure of DNA
4. Bases-Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Thymine
5. Chromosome-contain genes, which pass on physical characteristics
from parent to offspring. Genomes- a persons completes set of genetic
instructions
6. Inheritance- is the process by which genetic information is passed on
from parent to child
7. X chromosome- Female
8. Y chromosome- Male
9. Genotype- a description of the unique genetic makeup of an individual
10. Acquired- learn or develop
11. Trait- a quality or characteristic belonging to a person
12. Dominant Trait- a trait that is more prevalent and will show over a
recessive trait
13. Recessive Trait- trait that is not as prevalent and will show if dominant
trait does not overpower
14. Phenotype- description of the physical characteristics of an individual
15. Punnett Square- the device used to figure out possible offspring traits
of organisms
16. Allele- forms of a gene
17. Arch Fingerprint- Fingerprint with arc pattern
18. Loop Fingerprint- Fingerprint with loop pattern
19. Swirl Fingerprint- Fingerprint with swirl pattern
20. Genetic Variation- The different possibilities of a gene
21. Diversity-multiple possibilities
22. Carbon printing- the direct image of a finger pattern
C. Big Idea
The components of genetics, inheritance, traits and diversity
D. Content
Content taught through out lessons 1-4

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. Teacher will have the students write down one fact they
remember form the week.
2. Teacher will then have a few students share what they
remember
3. Teacher will explain to the student that today we will
play a review game to prepare for the test.
B. Development
1. Teacher will set up power point
2. Teacher will split students into two teams of 12
3. Teacher will set up the game
4. Teacher will ask the students questions
5. The students will answer questions correctly to receive
points for their team. If the team does not answer
correctly the other team will have a chance to answer
and receive half of the points
C. Closure
1. Teacher will ask the students if they have any questions
about the test and remind them that it will be the
following day.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. Johnny has a learning disability that affects his note
taking skills; there will not be any accommodations
needed for this lesson
2. Excelling /Struggling students: will be divided evenly
between the teams.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative- none
2. Summative- Unit test will be give the following day (see attached)

V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives
(Reflection on student performance written after lesson is taught,
includes remediation for students who fail to meet acceptable level
of achievement)

Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection
Did the students enjoy the game? Did it help them to review the
information?
Did the students know the information?
