6. Explain the reasons for the U.S.

use of the
atomic bomb against Imperial Japan.

1. The U.S. used the atomic bomb against Imperial Japan

because they
wanted Japan to surrender
. The U.S. thought
that if Japan could truly see that they had enough
resources and motivation to wipe out nearly tens of
thousands of people at once, then they might
consider
surrendering
and
preventing more lives from being
sacrificed in battle
. They believed that Japan would be able
put the devastating and lasting effects of the use of the
atomic bomb above honor.
The U.S. did not want to
continue fighting war, and they thought that this would be
the last straw.
2. The U.S. use the atomic bomb against Imperial Japan to
set up a firm, powerful stance after the war. The main
reason for the US use of the atomic bomb was to establish
postwar supremacy
. After Germany had surrendered in
WWII, tensions were rising between the US and Soviet
Union. The Soviet Union and the US had been allies during
the war, but President Truman knew that Stalin was a
followed a communist mindset. Unlike Roosevelt, Truman
took a strong stance against communism, and he knew that
Stalin would be expecting a sphere of influence of Eastern
Europe after the war.
Truman was very adamant against
the spread of communism domestically and globally
. As a
result, Truman want to establish the United States
supremacy. If Stalin and Truman worked together to end

the war with Japan, then Truman suspected Stalin would

ask for more concessions during peace negotiations.
By
dropping an atomic bomb on Japan, it would establish that
America had ultimately ended the war
. Therefore, Truman
used the atomic bomb to show
Americas power and to
establish that it had ended the war.
3. The United states had used the atomic bomb against
Imperial Japan because they had already started the
Manhattan project
and needed a reason to
justify
the
massive expenditure of time and money on the project.
America had spent
over 2 billion dollars
on the Manhattan
project and developing this special bomb. The atomic
bomb had mobilized over 120,000 people. If America had
not used this bomb, the government would have had
no
reason to develop such a weapon
. This project was lead by
several people such as Norris Bradbury, John Manley,
Enrico Fermi and J. M. B. Kellogg, Robert Oppenheimer,
and Richard Feynman. These people were convinced that
the atomic bomb was necessary against the fascists and
the militarists. To America, the bombing on Japan was a
scapegoat for a multi billion dollar project; if America had
not used the bomb, the research and development (which
was meant for the war) would have been wasted at the
time.
