Case Study: Surface Water Discharge
The Initial Discharge. In dry weather and with easterly winds this valve
becomes totally burried and is not visible as you walk the strand.
The Problem
Coastal discharge of surface water on a sandy beach. A check
valve was needed to stop the sand, but all flap-style valves
would simply be held shut buried in sand.
The Solution
Tideflex All-Rubber Check Valve (DN380) installed in 1990,
eliminated potential backflow. It had been designed to open
with as little as 25mm of water, withstand up to 15 meters of
backpressure and the turbulent waters of high tides, seasonal
storms and flash floods. It does not corrode, warp or freeze
and is virtually maintenance free. It handles large obstructions
without jamming. Due to its nature, the valve collapses around
any debris and seals off the backflow.
The discharge is now complete and the next rising tide will not enter
the outfall pipe.

The discharge builds and jet velocity increases.
The pressure forcing the lips together puts a squeeze
effect on any solids build-up. The valve forms around
the obstruction until enough runoff flexes the lips
open and flushes the material out.
Valves buried in sand, silt, mud or sunk in water can
still discharge flow. Being made entirely of rubber,
the highly elastic nature of the valve allows the flow
of a small amount of water even when completely
buried in sand. Because the open area is small, the
jet velocity is high, and this high jet velocity flushes
away the sand and other debris. The Tideflex Valve
ultimately clears itself from the grip of the sand. All
this time the Valve is still functional in preventing
backflow.
