Types of Redundancy for Front-End Connections

Frontendredundancyisachievedbyeliminatingsinglepointsoffailurethatcouldcauseaservertolose
connectivitytotheStorageCenter.
DependingonhowtheStorageCenterisconfigured,thefollowingtypesofredundancyareavailable.
Pathredundancy:WhenmultiplepathsareavailablefromaservertoanSC4020,aserverconfiguredfor
multipathIO(MPIO)canusemultiplepathsforIO.Ifapathfails,theservercontinuestousethe
remainingactivepaths.
Storagecontrollermoduleredundancy:IfonestoragecontrollermodulefailsinanSC4020,thefront
endportsfailovertothefunctioningstoragecontrollermodule.Bothfrontendconnectivitymodes
(legacymodeandvirtualportmode)providestoragecontrollermoduleredundancy.

Portredundancy:Invirtualportmode,ifaportgoesdownbecauseitisdisconnectedorthereisa
hardwarefailure,theportcanfailovertoanotherfunctioningportinthesamefaultdomain.Port
redundancyisavailableonlyforStorageCentersoperatinginvirtualportmode.
Fibre Channel Zoning

WhenusingFibreChannelforfrontendconnectivity,zonesmustbeestablishedtoensurethatstorageis
visibletotheservers.Planthefrontendconnectivityusingzoningconceptsdiscussedinthissectionbefore
startingtocablethestoragecontrollermodules.
ZoningcanbeappliedtoeithertheportsonswitchesortotheWorldWideNames(WWNs)oftheend
devices.Zonesshouldbecreatedusingasingleinitiator(usingphysicalWWNs)andmultipletargets(using
virtualWWNs).
ThevirtualWWNsfromeachstoragecontrollermodulemustbeincludedinthezonewitheachhosts
WWN.
Note: Forvirtualportmode,WWNzoningisrecommended.
