Determining the Difference

The Facts:
Provides vital insurance to more than 50 million people.
Medicaid is the single largest purchaser of nursing
facility and other long-term care services in the nation.
Medicare pays only for 100 days of NF care, and only
when the care immediately follows a three-day hospital
stay.
Medicaid eligibility is need based (must meet a financial
eligibility test).

The Application
Income
A list of all of the clients assets (or resources),
the sum total of which cannot be greater than
$2,000 (a few states have slightly higher caps).
Stocks, bonds, savings, and checking accounts, as
well as real property not serving as the primary
residence, are included in the resource definition
(more on the primary residence below).
Medicaid does not limit its Long-term care coverage
to nursing facility care. States are relying
increasingly on delivering care in the community
through home- and community-based services
(HCBS) programs.

Synopsis
The field placement supervisor could better
assist patients and family members by
helping them understand Medicaid needs and
qualifications. My project will be a tool to
assist family members and patients by
explaining Medicaid in a simpler way.

Medicaid Eligibility Assessment in

Nursing Homes
Who? I will develop a presentation on Medicaid Needs and
Qualifications that
can also be used as a checklist for patients and families at
NHC Mauldin.
What? A PowerPoint and handout to inform family members
and patients of Medicaid qualifications and needs.
Where? NHC (National Healthcare Corporation) Mauldin
When? Throughout the month of February
Why? To help my field placement supervisor by making
information handouts for patients and family members who
may qualify for Medicaid. Also to help all individuals
understand the Medicaid qualifications and needs.
How? By using PowerPoint and handouts as an informative
tool, I am hoping to assist my field placement supervisor with
his daily interaction with family members and patients so that
they have a better understanding of the Medicaid process.
