Tutorial 07: Failure of Metals

1)

Determine the maximum normal stress developed in the bar when it is subjected to
a tension of 8 kN.

2)

Determine the length L of the center portion of the bar so that the maximum
bending stress at A, B, and C is the same. The bar has a thickness of 10 mm.

3)

A wing component on an aircraft is fabricated from an aluminium alloy that has a

plane strain fracture toughness of 26 MPa.m . It has been determined that fracture
results at a stress of 112 MPa when the maximum internal crack length is 8.6 mm.
For this same component and alloy, compute the stress level at which fracture will
occur for a critical internal crack length of 6.0 mm.

4)

A cylindrical 1045 steel bar is subjected to repeated compression-tension stress

cycling along its axis. If the load amplitude is 66.7 kN, compute the minimum
allowable bar diameter to ensure that fatigue failure will not occur. Assume a
safety factor of 2.0.
