Thelessonisdesignedfor5thGradestudents,whoareabout10and11yearsold.Thisclass
iscomprisedof14malesand11femalesstudents,which3studentshaveIEP
accommodations,4studentsreceiveEnglishLanguageservices,and7receiveTier2and3
readingservices.Withthisinformationandtheknowledgeofmystudents,learningstyles
vary.ThisisthefirsttimestudentswillbeintroducedtocreatingaEdmodopageonafamous
historicalperson.Thestudentscomefrommoderatetolowincomesocioeconomic
environments.Thedynamicoftheclassisverydiverse.Studentsarewellbehavedbutsome
lackinterestinschoolandshowlittleeffort.About75%ofthestudentsarekinesthetic,
handsonlearning.Studentsworkwellwithmanipulatives.Ihavelearnedthatmystudents
learnbestduringhandsonactivitiesandincorporatingtechnology.Studentslearnbestwhen
theyhavetheopportunitytocreatetheirownproducts.About10%ofthestudentsarevisual
learnersandlearnusingpicturesandgraphics.About15%ofthelearnersareabletoexpress
themselvesthroughwriting.Somestudentsenjoywritingandsomestudentsenjoy
expressingthroughpicturesandvisuals.Thefifthgradersaregoingtoworkonwritingmore
tobecomemoreproficientinwriting.

andstudentswilldiscusstheimportanthistoricalfiguresfromtheAmericanRevolution.
StudentswillcreateaKWLchartaboutwhattheyknowabouttheAmericanRevolutionand
whattheywanttoknow.TheKWLchartwillbevisitedlaterandcompletedaboutwhat
studentshavelearned.Theteacherwilldescribetheassignmentandexplainthatstudents
willcreateaEdmodopageaboutanimportanthistoricalfigure.Thepagewillbeusedto
describetheimportanteventsandthecontributionsthatpersonmadefortheAmerican
Revolution.TheteacherwillassiststudentsincreatingaEdmodoaccountandpageforthe
persontheyhavebeenassignedto.Theclasswillwalkthroughthestepstogetherand
partnerswillbeassignedtoassistotherstudentsincasetheygetbehind.Afterevery
studentshavecreatedtheEdmodopage,theteacherwillwalktheclassthroughcreatinga
postthatcanbeseenontheirpage.Theteacherwilltalkabouttheexpectationsofthe
Edmodopageandhowitwillbeused.Thedocumentthatstudentswillgetisbelow.Students
willbeassistingassignedpartnersiftheyneedhelp.
2.ThemediastudentswillbeaccessingisthroughChromebooks.Atmyschool,eachstudent
hasaGoogleaccountandemail.Withthis,studentscanaccessthemanyothermediatools
Googlehastooffer.StudentswillbeabletocreateaEdmodoaccountandbeabletocreate
posts.ThiswillbethefirsttimestudentshavecreatedaEdmodopage,forschooluse,sowe
willwalkthroughtheprocessofhowtocreateanaccountandcreatepostsfortheblog.
3.StudentswillthenbeassignedanimportanthistoricalfigurefromtheAmericanRevolution.
Studentswillbeexpectedtocreatepostsandstatusesaboutimportanteventsfromthe
AmericanRevolution.Studentsareexpectedtopostpicturestosupportwhattheyareposting
about.Thepostshouldbeintheviewpointofthehistoricalfigure.Therubricthestudentswill
bereceivingisbelow.

Previewthematerials:TheteacherneedstopreviewtomakesuretheChromebooksare
chargedandareabletobeused.TheChromebookswereusedfortestingandtheyhaveto
berestarted.TheteacherneedstomakesurethattheChromebooksareallresetsostudents
canaccessGoogleDocsandEdmodo.

Preparethematerials:TechnologyandMedia:StudentswillbeaccessingChromebooks
duringthislesson.TheChromebookcartwillgetcheckedoutpriortothelessonandinthe
classroomreadyforstudentuse.StudentswillbeusingEdmodotocomposeposts
summarizingimportanteventsthathappenedintheAmericanRevolutionfromthepointof
viewofthehistoricalfiguretheyhavebeenassigned.TheEdmodopageswillbesharedwith
theteacherandstudents,onSeeSaw,sostudentscancommenttoeachotherspostsand
providefeedbackandsupport.Theclasswillwalkthroughthestepstogetheronhowto
createaEdmodoaccount,createposts,howtoaddpictures,andcommentoneachothers
posts.

Preparetheenvironment:Thelessonwilltakeplaceintheclassroom.Thestudentscan
movefreelyaroundtheroomwiththeirChromebook.Theycanaskpeerstosupportthemif
theyhaveforgottenanysteps.Topreparetheenvironment,theteacherwillhavethe
ChromeBooksoneachstudentsdeskalongwiththedirections.

Preparethelearners:Topreparethelearners,theteacherwillleadadiscussionaboutthe
AmericanRevolution.StudentswillcompleteaKWLchartaboutwhattheyknowandwantto
knowabouttheAmericanRevolution.TheteacherwilldescribetheAmericanRevolutionand
describethatmanyhistoricalfigureswereimportantduringthistime.Theteacherwill
introducesomeofthehistoricalfigures.Thestudentswillstarttoresearchthehistoricalfigure
theyhavebeenassigned.TheresearchthatstudentshavewillbewritteninGoogleDocsand
sharedwiththeteacher.Thentheteacherwilldescribetheassignment,thatstudentswillbe
creatingaEdmodopageandcreatepostsfromthepointofviewofthepersontheyhave
researched.Theywilltaketheinformationtheygatheredandcreatepostsandstatuses.After
theEdmodopostshavebeencompleted,thestudentswillcompletetheLcolumnoftheKWL
chart.

Thislessonwillbeanongoinglesson.Thefirstcoupleofdays,studentswillbecompleting
theKWLchartandresearchingaboutthehistoricalfigure,fromtheAmericanRevolution,that
theyhavebeenassigned.TheywillcompilealloftheirresearchinaGoogleDoc.Aftertheir
researchiscomplete,theywillstarttocreateEdmodopostsontheirhistoricalfigures
Edmodopage.Theywillcreateposts,includingpictures,fromthepointofviewoftheperson
theyhaveresearched.TheEdmodopageswillbecreatedtogetherasawholeclass.This
waytheteachercanwalkaroundtheroomandassistthosewhoarebehind.Thefifthgraders
willbepartneredupsothatonestudent,whoismorecomfortablewithusingtechnology,can
assistanotherstudent,onewhoisnotascomfortablewithtechnology.
TheEdmodopageassignmentwillbeworkedonforabout3weeks.Withinthosethree
weeks,thestudentsshouldhave10to15Edmodoposts.Therubric,below,willexplainthe
expectationsforthisassignment.Eachstudentwillreceiveacopyoftherubricsotheyknow
whattheyneedtodofortheblogassignment.Eachstudentwillalsoreceiveacopyof

expectations.StudentsareusingEdmodoforlearningandtotelltheirclassmatesaboutthe
historicalfigure.TheEdmodoshouldntbeusedfortheirpersonaluse.Itshouldbeusedas
aneducationaltooltoshareinformationandtocommunicateandcollaboratewithothers.

student.

3.Studentsusingdiscussionboardsareexpectedtotreatthemasclassroomspaces.Speech
