HHP 324: Coaching and Officiating Sport

Movie Project Presentation

This is a group presentation. Choose and view a movie or documentary that deals with coaching sports (e.g.,
specific sport, character, issue, etc.) and present a documented analysis of the movie that incorporates the
issues covered in class. Scholarly/theoretical considerations must be presented. A well-referenced paper should
accompany this presentation.
Project Roadmap
1. With your group, decide on a sports related feature movie
2. Decide in class and sign up for your movie title (each group must sign up for a different movie)
3. First meeting

Watch the movie together

Only if necessary, resort to watching the movie individually. Discuss and take informal
notes regarding what connections to make between the movie and issues covered in class,
in the text (Hardman & Jones), and/or additional scholarly works

4. Individual research

Consult additional sources and information

5. Second meeting

Discuss your findings and the movie again

Plan your presentation

6. Report the results of your discussion to the class in an oral report (can include Power Point, Prezi, etc.)
and to Dr. Buchanan in a short paper.

The Short Paper

The short paper will consist of a very brief summary of the main plot (1 page max) followed by a
longer summary of a discussion regarding specific theme(s) / issue(s) in the movie as related to the
text. The paper should be created as a shared Google doc file and divided up so that EVERYONE
IN THE GROUP is responsible for writing / editing / proofing!
Length: 4 pages double-spaced, plus works-cited list (total of 5 pages)
Use in-text references to scholarly sources (APA style) in support for your analysis [e.g., (Hardman &
Jones, 2007, p. 17)]. There should be a minimum of two in-text references from Hardman & Jones and
a minimum of one in-text reference from one additional scholarly source as indicated below.
If the movie is bases on real-life events, compare the movie version to what we know about the real
history.
You should consult at least one scholarly source such as the Journal of Coaching Education, Journal of
Speculative Philosophy, Sociology of Sport, Journal of Sport Behavior, Kinesiology, Quest, Nordic
Journal of Applied Ethics, Sport Psychologist, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, The New
Educator, etc. Use the scholarly source(s) to inform your own reading and discussion of the movie!

Presentation
LENGTH

10-12 minute presentation

You will receive a 2-minute warning and asked to stop your presentation after 12 minutes sharp

FORMAT

This is what I would like to avoid:

o Do NOT spend a great deal of time providing a detailed explanation of the entire movie. Remember that
many of your peers may have already seen the movie.
This is more of what I would like to see:
o One person could begin by giving us a VERY BRIEF OVERVIEW of main plot (1-2 minutes). Then
others report on their discussion and findings in a more conversational (but well prepared) style, with
everyone in the group offering insight and explanation.
o EVERYONE in the group should contribute equally to the discussion and the planning of the
presentation. Further, they must be fully prepared to add comments, and/or answer questions insightfully
at any time.

CONTENT

For your presentation, pick one aspect of a movie and connect it to issues discussed in class, in Hardman & Jones
text, and/or additional scholarly works.
o For example, your movie may bring up themes of ethics, morals, types of coaching behaviors, athlete
impact, good vs. bad coaching. You should take notes as you discuss several of them with your
group. However, when you report to the class, you will briefly state that the movie and your discussion
touched on X, Y, and Z, but for the purpose of this presentation you will focus on Z only.
Provide a brief (1-2 minutes) summary (main plot)
Your main focus should be on the particular theme or aspect you will cover
Share a summary of your discussion, reflections, and findings
For your research and discussion you should consult at least one scholarly source such as the Journal of Coaching
Education, Journal of Speculative Philosophy, Sociology of Sport, Journal of Sport Behavior, Kinesiology, Quest,
Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics, Sport Psychologist, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, The New
Educator, etc. which often publish scholarly reviews and research on sport movies. However, dont simply
report on what these sources made of the movie, but use them to inform your own reading and discussion
of the movie!

TECHNOLOGY

You may but dont have to show a clip of your movie to illustrate an important aspect you discussed with your
group. Still images may be just as helpful to illustrate your point.
If you decide to show a clip, limit to 1-2 minutes of one short clip only. It is only supposed to illustrate a larger
point you are making specific to your presentation. Editing several clips together can be very time consuming.
Too many clips can overwhelm the class and take away from your message. First and foremost, we want to hear
about what you and your group discussed.
In addition, you have to be prepared to share your reflections even if the technology fails.
You dont have to have PowerPoint / Prezi slides for your presentation. If you choose to have them, strongly
consider using them only to show important quotations or images that illustrate the point you want to make.
