Most of the materials that were rejected in the screening tests were considered
unacceptable from a safety standpoint such as impact brittleness and stress
corrosion cracking which could cause catastrophic failure of critical foil structure. it
became evident that a number of materials would meet the physical requirements
of hydrofoil use and that final selection of two materials would require a cost
comparison. It was also considered logical that one selected material should be
inherently resistant to the sea water environment and that one should require a
protective coating. The final comparison of several materials in each category was
based on estimated costs of materials, tooling, and fabrication that would be
required for a typical foil structure.
At the time this comparison was made, Titanium was recommended as one selected
material. By comparing results of titanium hydrofoil (along with pressure, velocity x
and y direction) with the values of alloy steel we can tell that titanium is more
advantages than that of alloy steel
