Subject: Chapter 6 (3-Digit Addition and Subtraction)

Grade Level: Second Grade
Number of Students: 18
Time: 3 Weeks
Rationale: Three-digit addition and subtraction draws children away from inefficient methods that they
may use to solve one or two-digit addition and subtraction problems (i.e. drawing a picture or using tally
marks) and leads them towards using the standard algorithm.
Domain: CC.2.NBT Number and Operations in Base Ten
Standard: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract

CC.2.NBT.7 Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based
on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction;
relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit
numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and
sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Mathematical Practices:

CC.K-12.MP.5 Use appropriate tools strategically

CC.k-12.MP.8 Look for and express regularly in repeated reasoning

Misconceptions: Children may not see the need to regroup in subtraction. Instead of regrouping, children
often find the difference between the two numbers, regardless of their position in the problem. Children
should be discouraged from saying, You cannot subtract a big number from a small number. This may
cause confusion later when they encounter integers.

Accommodations: Small-group instruction, re-teaching, and additional support will be available for
children who are struggling every lesson/day. For children who are moving ahead of others, there are
additional enrichment worksheets for these students to do and these students may also do review math
games or work with math manipulatives when finished with their work.
Possible Challenges: Possible challenges that may arise with this unit would include students not
knowing how to regroup twice, in the case of 104 27. Students may have trouble going all the way to the
hundreds place to regroup for the ones.
