I arrived at 13:00. I taught until 15h30.

Moeketsi assisted me to install Encarta. I also
installed anti-virus software and registry cleaner.
The MTN lab had electrical problems which were
supposed to be fixed since my last visit 3 months
prior. I was forced to use the second lab in order
to complete the training.

Wednesday
morning

Teachers and learners to visit the computer

lab, and familiarise themselves with the
location and navigation to
digital resources.

MTN lab could not be used. I used the

second lab and took the morning and
installed MS Encarta on 17 pcs.

Wednesday
afternoon

Introduction to Microsoft Word and creating

a Word document.

Introduction to Microsoft Word and

completion of the World cup exercise
sheet.

I struggled since I had no white board to display

my Power point presentation. Teachers did not
bring along all their manuals so they had to share.
Most teachers had their first experience on a pc.

Thursday
morning

Teachers and learners to visit the computer

lab, and familiarise themselves with the
location and navigation to
digital resources.

Grade 6 and 5s and their teachers

attended this morning session. They
were grouped, each group
had an hour session. We looked at
lessons from
Encarta Kids.

The students enjoyed the interaction with the

content on the computers very much. There were
no headphones to listen to lessons. Moeketsi
assisted me with comprehension.

Thursday
afternoon

Microsoft Excel PART I Mark book with

basic calculations.

Introduction to MS Excel, and

completing part 1 of a mark sheet, and
doing the first basic calculation.

ICT integration lessons continued, with

Grade 3 and 4 learners. Teacher training:
Completion of Excel mark sheet.

Grade 3 and 4s and their teachers

attended this morning session. They
were grouped, each group
had an hour session. We looked at
lessons from
Encarta Kids. Completed further

Teachers found the lesson useful and realised the

value of excel spreadsheets to make their teaching
duties easier. They were so excited, that they
asked me to complete the spreadsheet on Friday
with them
The students enjoyed the interaction with the
content on the computers very much. The
students used the headphones to listen to lessons.
Kids kept asking when they could come back. The
games and fun stuff particularly drew their
attention. The teachers were very happy with their
Excel mark sheet, realising its time saving
potential.

General: The MTN could not be used, since the power kept tripping. The school had a second lab, installed
by Patleys and I decided to use it, since I was at the school at a previous occasion and could not do the
training then. Its critical that these electrical problems be sorted out prior to training. In my opinion and
experience, the technicians contracted to ensure a working lab, gets away with murder. It seems to be the
major problem at all schools I trained at.

Methodology
An outcomes based approached were followed. Introducing the outcome of the lesson and then explaining
the usage of the tool in order to achieve the outcome. I demonstrated step-by-step and the teachers followed
and stopped me when they got stuck. I moved between the desks to provide assistance to those who were
struggling.
Tools in this case refer to Microsoft Word.
I could not utilise my PowerPoint presentation, since I had no working MTN pc lab. I improvised and explained
verbally the steps as I went along, waiting and ensuring that each student followed my step by step
instructions.

Conclusions & Feedback

THE TEACHERS:
The training went as planned. The teachers were very eager, and the pace was reasonable. Most of them did
attend all four sessions. They could only attend 2 hours per session due to transportation difficulties. Their
levels varied. Some showed a natural inclination and snapped quickly, but most were extremely slow in
comprehension. Most struggled with mouse skills. The quicker learners assisted in explaining to slower
students. All were extremely friendly and co-operative and expressed gratitude and a desire to learn more in
the future. Most came to the realisation how computers can assist them in their duties as educators.

THE STUDENTS:
Once the students grasped the possibilities of the software, I could not drag them away from the computers.
They expressed their desire to return for more. The audio visual interactive nature of the software engaged
them fully. The workshop was a huge success in this regard. I covered Encarta Kids using step by step lessons,
assisted by Moeketsi, to familiarise them with the mouse. For most of them it was their very first time in front
of a pc, but they quickly adjusted.

THE SCHOOL:
I was received with an open heart and was treated well by both teachers and students.
The lab was not in working order and I had to use the second lab.

Recommendations
1. Identification of different levels in computer literacy in both teachers and students prior to
commencement of the workshop.
2. Teachers and students must be taught about the dangers of viruses and must be educated on how to
properly scab USB devices before opening on the PC.
3. Connection of the internet needs to be sorted out so that DSTV and the internet can be accessed.
4. More emphasis on Excel since most teachers struggles more with it than with Word. PowerPoint
should be secondary to Excel and Word.
5. The Workshop sessions for teachers should be held within school hours. Rural school teachers are
dependent on lifts and can only stay until 15:30.
6. Regular access to the lab for students with assignments or projects. Those students should be given
preferential treatment above other students who just want to play.
7. NB: Anti-virus software which cannot be updated and electrical problems is rendering the whole
installation of labs powerless. Pcs are damaged in the long run and these 2 issues need serious
attention.
