ACTION RESEARCH IN READING COMPREHENSION

I.

Title: STRATEGIC TEACHING ACTIVITIES IN READING (STAR)

II.

Introduction/Background/Rationale

Obviously, this is a very nice adage but sadly, classrooms across the nation are
interspersed with pupils who experience the same type of frustration every day. They
dont possess adequate reading comprehension skills to do what is expected of
them. Without comprehension, reading is simply following words on a page from left to
right while sounding them out. The words on the page have no meaning. And while
people read for many different reasons, the chief goal is to derive some understanding
of what the writer is trying to convey and make use of that information whether for fact
gathering, learning a new skill, or for pleasure. Thats why reading comprehension skills
are so important. Without them the reader cannot gather any information and use it to
efficiently function and enjoy the richness of life.
We're always telling children that books and reading are good for them, but have
we ever really thought about why that's true? What do younger kids get from being read
to? Does reading matter?

Almost half of the researchers class belonged to the Frustration Level based on
the PHIL-IRI result conducted last June 8-11, 2015 She also observed that her pupils
has no love for reading even though she provided enough reading materials suitable for
them. During the administration of the 1 st Periodic Test, she witnessed that her pupils
dont give enough time in reading the test questions. The MPS of her class showed a
worrying outcome considering that they are carefully taught and remediate.
It is on this premise that she decided to do an action research on strategic
teaching activities in reading that would develop their love for reading henceforth enrich
their reading comprehension skill.
This action research will be instigated to Grade I class academic year 20152016.
III.

Description of the Project

The researcher is not aiming to have a 100% reader with comprehension of her

class. What she aimed is to decrease at least 5% of the total number of pupils who
belonged the frustration level.
Based on the PHIL-IRI Pre-Test result conducted last June 8-11 2015, her class
had 59% frustration level. With the strategies that she wished to implement, she hope
and pray that these will help improve their comprehension skills.
Secondly, the love for reading will be inculcate to each one of them if these
projects will be realized.
Lastly, with the comprehension skill that they develop and acquire through this
project, it will help increase the MPS of her class.
These teaching strategies in reading will be implemented in her English class.
Other reading activities will be done in remedial class and after class. These will be
reflected in her reading framework program.
IV.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this reading program is to inculcate in their young mind the love

for reading as well as to increase awareness of the pupils on the importance of reading
comprehension. Further, this aims to:

educate pupils about responsible utilization of reading materials;

decrease the number of frustration level of her pupils;
encourage pupils to develop a life-long habit of reading.

Monitoring and Evaluation

The researcher will conduct a Pre-test on September 1, 2015 to her class

advisory. The result of this will be used as basis for her research.
Strategic Teaching Activities for Reading (STAR) will be fully implemented.
The researcher will monitor the reading comprehension progress of her pupils.
Starting September, every Friday, during her English Subject, reading comprehension
test will be given to her class.
The 12:30 0clock habit will be implemented with strict supervision to monitor and
stablish the reading habit of her pupils.
Also she would conduct a Read pa More reading contest every Friday
afternoon. Each group will have a participant. Certificate of Appreciation will be given to
the winner.
Furthermore, the researcher will conduct a reading remediation randomly to her
pupils.
The results of these, will be recorded and tabulated for her action research.

Post-Test will be administered on November, 2015 to test the reliability of the

researchers reading program of activities.
