What is a protein?
1. Hemoglobin: a red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of
vertebrates.
2. Catalase: an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide.
3. Actin: a protein that forms the contractile filaments of muscle cells, and is also involved
in motion in other types of cells.
4. Myosin: a fibrous protein that forms the contractile filaments of muscle cells and is also
involved in motion in other types of cells.
5. Maltase: an enzyme, present in saliva and pancreatic juice, which catalyzes the
breakdown of maltose and similar sugars to form glucose.
6. Insulin: a hormone produced in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans that regulates
the amount of glucose in the blood. The lack of insulin causes a form of diabetes.
7. Lipase: a pancreatic enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of fats to fatty acids and
glycerol or other alcohols.
8. Myoglobin: a red protein containing heme that carries and stores oxygen in muscle cells.
It is structurally similar to a subunit of hemoglobin.
9. Collagen: the main structural protein found in animal connective tissue, yielding gelatin
when boiled.
10. ATP-Syntase: s an important enzyme that creates the energy storage molecule ATP.
