Design of an Automated Book Picking System for Ceylon Pencil Company Ltd.

The need of automation is a very important in the industry nowadays. Especially such
organizations like production industries. The bielomatic book printing machine is used in
Ceylon Pencil Company Ltd for book manufacturing. It is an automated manufacturing machine
but need human input at the end of the printing process for the book picking and packing
process. Since stapled side of the book are thicker than the other side of the book the workers
arrange Book sets such a way that each five set of books are placed opposite side to each other.
In this project we design an automated book picking system. The design includes book folding
machine and a book collecting conveyor unit. We designed a flat belt and roller based
mechanism for folding machine. The next step of the process is to pick given number of books
and arrange them to send through a shrink packing machine.
All the steps in the machine were design to controlled using programmable logic controller and
sensors to count the number of books. This paper discusses the proposed system, overview of the
design, the power calculation of the system and its installation methods.
