waslivinginatimeofcapitalism,whichaffectedmostofhiswritingsthatwerewritteninthe
nineteenthcentury.Thispoem,ISitandLookOutispessimisticandrealisticatthesametime.
Thisisconveyedbythespeakerssyntaxanddiction,theimagery,andtheunderlyingtheme.

moralsonhumanconcerns.Peopleweremorefocusedontheprinciplesandrules,andhuman
concernswereputaside.Thethemeofthispoemistobeanindividual,andifyoubelievein
somethingthatisnotright,youshouldtakeactionratherthansittingandnotchangingthe
situationathand.
Whitmanhasmanyliteraryelementsandreferencesinthispoemthatconveyhisattitude
andtoneofnegativityandpessimistic.Thespeakerisexplaininghisobservationsaboutthe
