7. PROCEDURE
7.1 Preliminary preparation
Make sure old concrete has to be in sound surfaced except for roof slab where in the surface has to be
smoothed and cleaned prior to install vapor barrier.
Put markings for survey lay-out and slope to final and correct elevation.
Install all embedded items prior to mortar screed.

7.2 Mix Proportion

Refer to BS 8000: Part 9: Code of practice for cement/sand floor screeds and concrete floor toppings 1989,
Table 2. Guidance on changes in mix proportion of cement /sand screeds when damp sand is used. Using mix
ratio, cement : sand as 1:3 Then proportion by mass using cement : 50kgs and dry sand : 150kgs.
7.3 Mixing of materials

Mixing for cement/sand screeds will be manual and placed manually.

7.4 Placing and compacting

Mortar screed will be placed manually.

Damp the surface with water prior to start placing of mortar screed.

Check that the base has been suitably prepared to receive the screed.

Use narrow strips of screed materials, laid and compacted to the finished level to establish the level of the

screed.

Place screed materials in bays separated by leveling strips. At the surface allow a surcharge of

approximately 10mm above the leveling strips to allow for compaction to level.

Tubular pipe has to be used as a leveling guide/strip and supported independently.

Fill any low areas, re-compact and rule out.

7.5 Finishing

Finish the surface as required by the approved drawing or as needed for the type of flooring to be supplied.

Finish to a flat surface with a hand steel trowel.

7.6 Curing and protection

Proper curing should be done for the area.

Protect screeds against damage, wear and contamination during subsequent building operations.
