(include scoring key, rubric, etc.)

Skill: Read and solve one-step word problems using addition or subtraction.

Instructional Procedures (identify steps in sequential order)

Differentiation
( including IEP goals being addressed)

A. Engage and Explore

Engage: Alright, friends! Has anyone ever been to an aquarium? (yes) What did you see? (Allow

3-5 students to give some answers. Anticipated: sharks, octopi, starfish, fish, etc.) What is a group
of fish called? (a school) A group of fish is called a school; just like we are in school! Lets look at
some schools of fish and see how many fish there are. (Pull up a link to a picture of a school of
fish. If there are 63 fish in this school and then 27 new fish join. We are not saying our answers
out loud. Put your thumb up if you think the total number of fisher got bigger and your thumb down
if you think there will be less fish total. Why do you think that- turn to your neighbor and share.
Explore: Students will work in partners and solve the worksheet (attached). Students will share
how they solved the problems, students will share their method of solving with their partner. As
students are working teacher will walk around and find three to five different methods to solve the
problems and later ask those students to share their methods with the class. As the teacher is
circulating around the room they will ask questions to students. How are you solving these
problems? How do you know that will work? Is this an addition or subtraction problem? How do
you know it is addition or subtraction?
B. Explain and Discuss
Explain: Teacher will call up preselected students to share their strategies and show how they
solved the problem. Then ask students if anyone else did their problem this way or if they could

now do it this way.

C. Closure
Review that when solving a word problem, it is necessary to find the starting value and determine
what type of problem it is (addition or subtraction).
