Mini Landfill

Materials:
Plastic transparent cup
Glass cup
Soil (2 1/2 cups)
30 ml of water daily
tin foil
egg shell
apple

paper
metal wire
leaf
Styrofoam
Sealer
Plasticine
Sharp tool

Purpose:

Hypothesis:

Experiment:
1. Puncture several holes into the bottom of the plastic cup, the size of a
screwdriver tip
2. Cover the inside bottom of the plastic cup with plasticine
3. Fill the plastic cup with 1/3 of the dirt
4. Cute two small pieces of tin foil, apple, paper, leaf, metal wire, and
Styrofoam. Carefully document the conditions of the items before you
cover with soil.
5. Place one piece of each item on top of the dirt.
6. Place approximately 1 inches of soil on top of the items.
7. Again place one piece of each item on top of the dirt.
8. Fill cup with dirt on top of second layer of items.
9. Place plastic cup into glass cup
10. Once inside the glass cup, pour 30 ml of water onto the landfill
11. Seal the mini landfill with the sealer wrap.
12. Each day open the sealer and pour 30 ml of water onto the landfill.
Reseal when done.

landfill and if there is any leachate in the bottom of the glass
cup. What colour is it? Does it smell? How much is there?
