AsMs.LesleypulledtheHighTechHighvanintothenearlyemptyparkinglotofthe
smallpinkwoodenpaneledrestaurant,onequestionenteredmymind:Whoeatspastaateleven
inthemorningonaThursday?IalmostimmediatelyforgotaboutthatassoonasIsteppedout
ofthevanandontotheconcretewherethebrightsunshonerightintomyeyesandIsmelledthe
aromaticscentoffreshsaucesandspices.Isoonrememberedwhywewereconductingthis
interviewKPastaisalocallyownedfamilyrestaurantfoundonlyinImperialBeach,ittook
themtwoyearsjusttoopenbecauseofthestrictecofriendlycodesthecityofImperialBeach
hasforbuilding.Theytakeprideinbuyingonlylocalandorganicproducemostlyfromtheir
neighborSuziesFarm.Thiswasoursecondscheduledinterviewanditcouldnotcomesooner.
WewalkedthroughtheglassdoorintothecompactinteriorandItookinmy
surroundings:acolorfulchalkboardmenutakesupmorethanhalfoftheleftwallanddirectly
acrossfromitisanequallylargewindowfillingthesmallrestaurantwithmorethanenough
light,nolightbulbsneeded.ThewomanatthecashregistergreetedusandexplainedthatAnnie
waswaitingforusinthepatio,andsowewent.Wewalkedoutsideontoawoodendeckunder
whitetentsandeventhoughwewereaboutamileawayfromtheactualbeachthecoolocean
breezewaspresentandwelcomedinthatsunnymorning.Awomancrouchedoverherlaptop
withpapersscatteredaboutonthetableshewassittingandlookedupandgaveusabroadsmile
whensherealizeditwasus.ShestoodupandIwassurprisedtoseethatshewastheownerof
theKPastaShehadflouronherKPastatshirtwornoverregularlightwashjeansandher
midlengthauburnhairwaspulledbackintoasimpleponytail.Ireallywantedtoknowhowshe
managedtorunthishighlyratedrestaurantwhilealsocominghometosixyearoldtwinboys
andanequallyasengagedhusband.Shemotionedforustohaveaseatandweallgathered
aroundthelargewoodentableinthecenteroftheshadedpatio.Itwassilentandforabrief
momentyoucouldonlyhearmefumblingwiththeGoPrountilZoebroketheicebyintroducing
usandreadingthefirstquestion.
