Reflection 5,6

Learning styles and differentiation

My task this week was focused on the learners and observing them. First, I observed the class for
1 hour and I noticing that the children divided into groups while the teacher explaining the
lesson, so some of the student are active and respond to the questions, some of them are quiet
and a small group of them are not focused to the lesson. I noticed also that children while they
doing the activities, some of them finished the activity quickly, so they go to any centers they
want such as some of the student went to the literacy center to read. The other group are who do
not finish the activities so the teacher in this issue have two choices, she waits for them intel they
finish it or asks them to finish it in the next day. In addition to, I noticed that Mrs. Sarah have the
ability to manage and deal with the students in different levels.
My second observation for this week was observed two students. Student(A) from the lower
level, who was a child who has not reached expected cognitive target. And to link this to the
piagets theory we have studied, I believe that student (A) is still in preoperational stage.
Student(B) from higher level, who was a child that has exceeded cognitive level expectation.
Related to what I studied from piaget theory that this type of children are develop and moving
from the first stage Preoperational stage to operational cognitive stage.
Student (A) cannot complete her work in class, because she cannot understand the lesson from
the first time and she is slow. I can see that this child having difficulty in learning because she
always asking for help, actually that surprised me so much. She has trouble focusing during the
class, because she cannot absorb the information quickly, so Mrs. Sarah repeated the information
more than one time and step by step, gave her simple activities and help her in doing it. I think
that she uses perfect strategies to deal with this child, because its affected positively to the child.
However, student (B) is working very well in the class, do the activities in perfect way, finish it
and the reason behind that is she can understand the lesson quickly. I was really interested when I
saw her raises her hand for all the questions, I said for myself: wow, she is very clever girl. It

is obvious that this child exceeds expectation because she is always member of the special group,
that giving them different activity from the rest of the students, because their mind developed
and they can absorb new and high level information. My mentor teacher gave for student(B)
another lesson and activities. I feel thats good strategies, because it develops her.
Finally, I realized the differentiation between the students levels, so in my opinion the best way
to deal with student(A) is to be with her step by step, give her activities that fit with her stage,
lake of pressure, dont require the child more than her effort and support her by praising her
work and her personality. Whereas, the best way to deal with student(B) is to support and
praising her, give her different activities that help to develop her mind and encourage her to
participate in competitions.
