FRED KAPS LECTURE FRED KAPS LECTURE FRED KAPS LECTURE FRED KAPS | | | Kon Bree hes Magic Place 145 Wardour Sbreet Linden U7 OF 734 G24O The 13th of February, 1973, Frank and | take this opportunity of expressing our appreciation for your continued confidence by sending for ‘THE LECTURE NOTES OF FRED KAPS', We hope you will enjoy the contents for they provide much food for thought and, in so doing, will add much to your magical pleasures, Six days ago, Fred Kaps left us following a three day visit, A great three days of sheer brillionce by ¢ man whom, in my opinion, is the finest all round magical entertainer in the world today, Famed English professional, Tommy Cooper, shared a few hours with us and was man enough to say - "The man wants to meke you turn it ia |" An opinion which, if | did not love my work so much, | would endorse 100%, Lecture notes ore not complete books in themselves, You will only get the benefit of them by close study. We have added a page which describes the moking of a trick that perhaps prompted you to send your order, To make the trick is simple enough ond, | know well that the effect has been and is still being sold by others, Make and perform it THE KAPS WAY and you have a close up miracle indeed. Finn Jon is with us for twelve months, | asked Fred to perform the trick for Finn who raved over the effect, speed and simplicity and almost fell out of the chair in which he sat, Today, | do not get time to enjoy reading about magic as | once used todo. For an hour or two, it is my sincere wish that you will endorse what | think about Fred Kaps, | only wish it had been possible to invite you all to see this great performer working. Yours faithfully, che Broce Ken Brooke FRED _KAPS LECTURE 7 SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT Do you want to Mystify ? Or Entertain ? Or both? Base for magic is as for music, the classics, (Cups & Balls, Linking Rings, Billiard Balls. Torn & Restored Paper. etc.) Classics are the easiest in principle (method) and best in effect. Effect should come first, Method second, Because your audience sees you os a magician, they will not think you are actually using a silk with a slit in it to push a cigarette through, so, might as well use one ! When doing Card Colour Change, have a lit cigarette between the fingers of the right hand, Use a bulldog clip when handling bills out for counting as in Short Change Trick. (Hornswoggled. My Best, Page 189.) Good books to read - Erdnase, Expert Card Technique, Greater Magic, Bobo on Coins, Stars of Magic, The Marlo Books, Dai Vernon Books, Slydini Books, Buckley Books. Fitzkee Trilogy. , Mental train your effects, When building « routine, ask yourself first, what next, then WHY ! If you feel you do a certain movement naturally, find a sleight that suits this natural movement, Even when you have a beautiful move that does not suit your natural movement - Throw it out ! Certain sleights are not restricted to what they were mode for. Only very few sleights are not in the books, so read them | Learn to read your books properly by eliminating all you cannot use. Fool your audience any way you like, buf fool them, Remember - METHOD COMES SECOND ! A layman does not think that four billiard balls, four thimbles, four cigarettes or four coins between the fingers are different tricks, He sees only the same effect with different objects. The greatest strength of a performer doing a private party is his behaviour as a private person, FRED KAPS LECTURE 2 INTERNATIONAL COINS THROUGH TABLE. Show four coins on table, (Duplicate of third coin on lap) Pick up coins and throw, one by one into the left hand, On throwing third coin, execute ‘click pass! Right hand containing one coin rests for a moment on table and leaves the coin on table, When sliding hand forward to pick up glass (arm hides coin) the action of sliding the arm back automatically laps the coin, Put glass under table and pass first coin through table. Open left hand to show three coins, Close left hand and by so doing, push one coin to heel of hand. Right hand comes from under table and drops first coin from the glass, on the table, to the left, As this is done the coin from the left hand is lapped, With right hand pick up the visible coin and drop back into the glass, Put glass under table and poss the second coin, Show two coins in left hand and leave them on the table, Show two coins in glass and - drop them, from the glass, on table, then, pick up the two coins and drop them back in the glass, Pick up the other two coins one by one and drop them in the left hand (Second coin goes to the heel of the hand), Right hand puis glass under table, When left hand moves forward to middle of table leave one coin on table under arm, Right hand picks up duplicate of this coin from lap and drops in glass, Open left hand to show one coin, In sliding the arm back the tabled coin is lapped and, at the same time, the glass is brought forward to show three coins, Tip the coins out then drop them back in the glass. Wrap fourth coin in paper (Coin Fold *), Put glass under table with right hand, Underneath the table the right hand picks one coin out of glass and drops it back in the glass to give illusion of fourth coin dropping into the glass, Bring glass from underneath the table and by executing the Han Ping Chien move from coin-fold, show four coins on table, Open coin-fold and tear up. * Dave Ossip Coin - Fold, "Pallbearers" January, 1971. FRED _KAPS VERSION OF TWISTING THE ACES USING THE ASCANIO SPREAD Take the Ace ~ Two - Three and Four of Clubs from ¢ red deck and fo a blue deck, Remove the duplicates from the blue deck, put them Performance - Spread deck face up, removing the Ace-Two-Three and Four of Clubs taking care nof fo show red backs, Order - Face up Four at face and Ace at rear. For a moment, place the cards on the face down deck stealing one extra BLUE card underneath this packet, Toble the deck. Order is now ~ from bottom up - One face down blue card then red - backed Ace ~ Two™= Three and Four face up, FRED KAPS LECTURE 3 Hold cards from above in right hand, fingers at the front, thumb at back so left thumb can slide two cards, one by one, into left hand. Order is now ~ 4~- 3- FD ~ A-2, Do Ascanio Spread to show all cards once again, Put Ace (double) on face of fan for a moment. Take (double) Ace and put between 4 and 3, Do Ascanio Spread and show ‘Ace face down, Put (double)Three on top of spread and close fan. Do Ascanio Spread to show 2 has now turned face down, Put (double)Ace on top of spread and close, Do Ascanio Spread and show Three has now turned face down, Put (double) Two on bottom. Do Ascanio Spread and show Four (double) has turned face down, Put (double)(face down) between 3 & 2. Do Ascanio Spread and show ell cards face up. Put double card (Two showing) on bottom of packet, Drop packet face up on the face down deck, Remove cards one by one from deck and show they now have red backs. COMBINATION . LARRY JENNING'S ONE CUP-THREE BALL & CHOP CUP ROUTINE, Properties - Chop Cup, Three magnetic balls. One large magnetic ball, One 18" silk, Small glass, Felt bag. Small, non magnetic matching ball. Set up - Three magnetic balls are pushed up in the bottom of the cup so they stick there, Silk in glass in bag. Non magnetic ball is also dropped in bag. Wand in left inner pocket, Large load ball in left side pocket, Have Chop Cup on the lop. Performance - Open bag and let small glass drop out of bag (small ball stays in corner of bag), Take silk out of glass, Put bag and glass on table to your left, Spread silk on table and bundle up as in Larry Jenning's routine with cup and three balls (Genii, Vol 34. No 9, May 1970.) Take wand from pocket. Make spinning move above silk and produce the cup. Put silk back in glass, Pick up cup for ¢ moment to show around, Put down to dislodge the three balls, Make another spinning move with the wand above cup and produce the three balls, Put the three bells in front of the cup a few inches opart, Call them numbers 1 = 2 and 3. Drop No | in cup, rattle and lift cup from left hand and put empty cup on teble. (Dislodge bell). Pick up wand and vanish ball, Show ball has arrived under the cup. Pick up ball in right hand, appear to place in left which appears to put it in left side coat pocket, saying - "We won't use that anymore |" FRED KAPS LECTURE A, Right hend (with palmed ball) reaches over the open cup to pick up ball 2 = as the hand passes over the cup, allow the palmed ball to drop into it. Put ball 2 in left hand, Pick up wand to push through hand to start vanish of ball. Put cup mouth down lightly | As wand is half way through hand, pretend to hear a remark then show that there is nothing under the cup as yet. Replace the cup dislodging the ball. Open left hand and ailow ball to drop on fable. Hold wand pencil fashion in right hand. Pick up ball in same hand and appeor to place in left. Push wand through hand and show ball vanished. With wand, tilt cup backwards to reveal ball under cup. Right hand picks up ball and throws both balls in left hand which puts them in the left side pocket. Left hand picks up cup. Right hand picks up ball and drops it in the cup. Rattle ball and pretend to drop ball from cup into the left hand, Put cup down lightly. Pull left sleeve with right hand. Show cup empty once more (dislodge ball). Pick up wand and vanish ball. Show third ball has reappeared under the cup. Pick up glass, cover with silk and put ball on top for penetration effect as in the original Larry Jennings routine, Show bail has not penetrated but has vanished. Find it back in the bag. Cover glass with cup and cover cup with silk (Lorry Jennings routine) Pick up bell and place in left side pocket. When left hand leaves pocket it has all three balls palmed, At the same time, the right hand picks up silk from cup and passes it fo left hand. Right hand lifts cup from glass to reveal ball in glass, Right hand lay cup to the right, mouth towards audience, picks up glass and drops ball from gloss to table, Right hand picks up cup to show empty and performs Larry Jennings load with the three balls under cover of the silk, Silk is put in right side pocket. Pick up ball on table and put in left pocket at the same time palming the large ball. With wand, point from pocket to cup and show all three balls have returned, Load large ball under cup letting it attach to magnet or, if the ball is large enough, to let it stick by itself in the cup. Cover the three balls with the cup for a moment, saying - "Did you see them travel back under the cup 227 - You did not ? Well, | will do it once more !" Lift cup to pick up the three balls then put cup on table to dislodge the lerge ball. Throw three balls across into the left hand which hand then places them in the pocket. Show large ball hos now crrived under the cup. Vanish lorge ball by cone and ball move, Lop the ball (See Larry Jenning's routine) Show cup empty. When looking for silk take ball from lap to right side pocket, leave ball in pocket, Cover cup with silk, Do Larry Jenning's vanish, Put silk in glass and drop gloss in bag, Finish, FRED KAPS LECTURE 5. LAM IN DEBT Effect - Four 'bills' (represented by playing cards) add up to ten Dollars, Each time a ‘Bill’ is paid, the remaining bills still add up to ten, until only one card is left itisaten! Preparation - Have on top of deck (from top down) 5 = 7 and 1 of Clubs. Performance - Spread the deck between the hands to take the Ace - 2-3-4 of Clubs (jogging them up). By doing Dei Vernon's adding move, odd the 5 - 7 and 16 to the back of these cards os you remove them from the deck, Show that the four cards add up to ten and tell a story about four bills to be p (Order is from face to back - Ace - 2- 3- 4-10 -7-~ 5). Keep the 5-7 and 10 hidden behind the 4 (Use the Buckle or Push Off} Deck is face down on table, Remove Ace as first bill to be paid and drop face down on the deck, Tell them that you have three bills left to be paid, When you show them - 2 (buckle) 3 and 5 still ‘adds up to ten, Put 5 on top, Remove the 5 (double lift to carry the 2 with it) and place face down on deck. Say you still have two bills left to be paid, Show them... .(Buckle)3 and 7 , still odds up to ten. Put 7 on top, triple lift to remove 7 and place face down on deck ot same time turning the left hand inwords so os not to show last card. When card is turned over ~ IT IS A TEN SPOT ! REAL MAGIC Rings and silk combination. Silk in pocket. Show key ring using the Dai Vernon twist move, Take silk, rope spin and hold in left hand, loop=wise (like @ linking ring). Key in right hand, held horizentally, Crash Link through the silk. Turn half right, letting silk hang on ring, Show with Kops steering wheel move. (Move ring between palms, key against palm, move back and forth like a steering wheel) Pull silk free. Repeat link. This time, to unlink, hold key in right hand, horizontally, and move forward hitting the front of silk with rear of key ~ count "One", Repeat "Two" as you go back, unlink via key where silk hangs down at rear, as you say "Three" move ring forward and it ‘appears to melt through the silk, Final move - Twirl silk in left hand only by holding it at Fingertips. Crash link through silk half way down from hend, Let go of silk and repeat steering wheel move. Silk will untwist ond its width will conceal key as it hangs on the ring. Follow up with simple two ring moves, based on the Vernon Pull-Through, Jack Miller and Rink moves. FRED KAPS LECTURE 6 ANOTHER CLICK PASS ( As used for International Coins Through Table ) Place four coins in @ row on the table from left to right. Pick up coin on left with right hand and throw in left hand toking it into the classic polm position, Pick up the next coin with right hand, throw into left so it hits the first coin with its edge and is allowed to fall on the Fingers (First coin stays in classic palm). When third coin ts picked up with the right hand, the left hand is slightly turned inwards, back to audience. Pretend to throw third coin in left hand but keep the coin hidden behind the fingers, and, at the same time, allow classic palmed coin to fall con second coin resting on the fingers of the left hand. The sound gives the illusion that the third coin is really thrown into the left hand. Left hand contains three coins, right hand has one coin palmed. Variation - Have the four coins laying on the right hand with one coin in the classic palm position, Show coins and by turning and closing the hand, immediately start throwing coins, one by one, into the left hand as in first version. NEWSPAPER TO DOLLAR BILLS. Effect - Pieces of newspaper or magazine instantly change to dollar bills, Preparation ~ Have fake made up from dollar bill and piece of newspaper the same size GedoTlar bill. Fold both in half, half inch off centre. Give the large helves together. Fold the smaller halves over in opposite directions, Cut pieces of newspaper the some size os dollar bills, Fold these, and ordinary dollar bills, exactly as you did with fake, 4" off centre, Put dollar bills in dollar side of fake and newspaper in newspoper side of fake, Open up the newspaper side and pieces of newspaper, Put one piece of newspaper underneath this packet, Put packet in wallet, Performance - Open wallet and remove packet, Show packet freely on both sides, Put packet (dollar side towards you) in left hand, Count the pieces of newspaper from one hand to the other, occasionally showing the backs, Put lost piece on top, Fold the newspapers over towards yourself at the crease and hold in the left hand. Reach over with right hand in front of packet, thumb on top, fingers underneath taking hold of the top portion only. By swinging the right hand out and up, the newspapers will instantly change to dollar bills, Put packet in left hand and count the bills into the right hand occasionally showing the backs, By repeating the above, the dollar bills change back to newspapers, THANKS TO TENKAL CARD PRODUCTION Fifteen or more cards are palmed in the right hand by a variation of the Tenkai Palm, FRED KAPS LECTURE 7 Have the fifteen cards face up with the index corner of the cards in your palm, (about the same place as you would classic palm a coin) Hold the outer, non index corner (same long side as index corner) with fleshy part of thumb, The cords cre slightly bent downwards, You con now open your fingers and the wider you move your thumb outwards (towards yourself) the more angle proof the poim becomes, To produce the cards - Close the hand naturally until second finger hits back ‘of the bottom card at the non index corner. Second finger buckles cord a little further inwards and out. First finger goes on top of the protruding corner, Both Fingers stretch out taking card with them until thumb can go underneath and card into view, Repeat for continuous production, Display six cards between fingers of left hand, then produce fan with right. Form flower with stem. “RED "IN BLUE DECK. Prepare on Red backed card by putting Stik Tack on its face, Place this card in pocket. Put duplicate of this card on bottom of Blue deck, Show Blue deck, Take red card from pocket ~ Place on top (Holding a break) and cut to bottom, Ask spectator to think of any card in the deck and call its name aloud. If he calls the red card you have a miracle : If not, call attention to the cord on bottom by saying " You could have thought of the bottom card because it was displayed, but you did not - Let's see where your card is," Spread cards from left to right between hands to find named cord. Put this card (for a moment only) on top of your prepared card, press and slide this card face up on the table, use the left thumb only. This leaves duplicate of your prepared card still showing on the face of the deck, Show backs of deck to be all blue, Pick up double card from table and show it as the only card in the deck with a red back, Saliva can be used as impromptu substitute for Stik Tack, ‘A "SOUND" COIN VANIS! You need two small straight Sided conical, metal cups, Cut off the top of one cup so about 13" remains, Place normal cup into this small one. Put several coins in large cup. Pick up cup(s) and place in left hand, Throw coins from cup into right hand, Lift large cup by edge, out of small cup(which remains palmed in left hand)with first finger and thumb of right hand, Show cup on all sides, Put cup into left hand in front of small cup, Jingle coins in right hand and throw them, over large and into the small cup, Rattle coins in cup, Toke large cup in right hand and FRED _KAPS LECTURE 8 show coins have vanished, By putting cup back into left hand you can put the cup. in the small cup again to show hands completely empty. Do the moves in reverse and you can produce the coins again, SUN _& MOON IN SPECTATOR'S HAND. ( Silver & Copper ) You will require what is known as a Silver/Copper Coin, English Penny one side ~ American Half Dollar on the other. You also require an expanded English Penny shell. After Sun & Moon effect (See Bobo's Coin Magic) ask spectator to hold his right hand extended, palm upwards. Show Half Dollar and drop on his hand, near the root of the third finger, Show penny, and by turning the hand palm downwards, palm shell off double sided coin and drop double sidedcoin on his hand showing penny, near root of his first and second fingers. Ask him to close his hand over the coins and turn it, back up. Ask him to pull one coin half way out of his hand with his left hand, first finger and thumb, Because of the coin situation in his hand, he can only take out the double sided coin, half dollar side showing, Stop him when coin is half out of his fist, Reach for the coin and put it on the back of his hand for a moment, while you explain the situation ~ Half dollar on the back of his hand - Penny in his hand. Pick up double sided coin from his hand, slide the coin back into the finger palmed shell (a la Sun & Moon) and finish by showing the transposition in his hands ! "LARETTE" TABLE SET UP. 'Larette', on Austrian magician of the 30's, used a special case to carry his magic in, and with a silk, transformed it into a perfect working area that keeps props out of sight until required, It provided a ‘servant! area, the front of which was used for card display. Made simply by nesting a box and its lid (both mouth upwards) with a 36" silk trapped between them, Size can vary to suit your needs. You can fold silk over open top before show to keep eyes from seeing what you have, You can do this very simply with @ cardboard shirt box, or, you can have a case with sections custom built. TOSHEROON VARIATION: BOB DRIEBEEK' 1, Instead of picking card up from face of deck (Marlo move) palmed card is fed under coin (or prediction) laying on face of deck, 2, Asa prediction, Known and predicted card on bottom of deck. Prediction on table. Count cards one by one on table face down until told to stop. Put balance of deck in right hend preparing for bottom palm, As left hand picks up prediction from table to put on counted cards, right hand drops balance of deck on table and bottom palms the known card. Immediately, the right hand helps to squareup the counted cards on table, thereby feeding card underneath prediction on top of this packet. Packet is handed over to spectator to open and prediction and verify card stopped at. FRED KAPS LECTURE. % 3. Another prediction - Known cord on top. Dribble cords from right hand onto left until stopped. Spectator puts prediction on these cards, When right hand puts balance of deck on toble, execute one hand top palm, Immediately, right hand helps to square up the cards in left hand, feeding card underneath prediction, Packet is handed to spectator to verify. 4, Spectator is a magicion ~ Have large coin handy, Spectator peeks at cord. This card is brought to top and palmed, Ask spectator to lock at top card. "ls this your card 2" = It is not, Put coin on the card on top of deck, Replace deck on table, Ask spectator to make magic move above deck. He is puzzled and usually does something funny. Demon- strate what he is supposed to do and by so doing, feed palmed card under the coin. Heve spectator duplicate your move and show that he made his card oppecr under the coin, 5, Visible card change under coin. Peeked card is brought to top. Deck is turned face up (card now on bottom), Dribble cards from right to left hand until told to stop, Put cards in right hand under cards in left, executing pull down move, (Card is still on the bottom of the face up deck) Put coin on top of cards, Perform colour change, sliding palmed card under the coin, COIN CHANGE & VANISH IN SILK Attach a piece of double sided tape to a coin, Palm this coin in the right hand, tape side away from palm, Borrow coin (same type as set up) and have it marked on the same side as the tope is on the duplicate. Pick up handkerchief and spread flat over the left hand, By passing right hand over the silk, drop palmed coin on handkerchief, Close fingers over coin and press against the silk. Take marked coin from spectator and drop in silk, executing drop fingerpalm at the same time, opening left fingers to show duplicate coin on silk, Take hold of coin through silk and turn over the left hand, Give spectator to hold. Vanish coin by pulling hanky out of spectator's hand by corner. Coin sticks to silk and has apparently vanished. Marked coin is found anywhere you wish, These notes were written by Pete Biro of Oakland, California, U.S.A, July Ist, 1972, Permission to sell them was given to 'Ken Brooke's Magic Place’ during a visit made by Mr Kaps early in February, 1973.
