Before Reading
Introduce the book: Students will read the title, look at the front and
back cover. ASK: what kind of book is this and what might it be about
Students will preview the rest of the book by looking at the pictures.
Predict: what do you think this book is about. Give evidence from the
text.
EXAMPLE: to make my prediction, I think about the title of the story,
Sparkys Mystery Fortune. I wonder what the mystery is. When I look at
the front cover illustration, I see a girl holding some small pieces of
paper. I wonder weather she is Sparky. On the title page I see bits of
broken fortune cookie. The pieces of paper must be from the cookie. I
wonder if Sparky gets a mystery fortune.

Together: on cards these events are written Emma goes to dinner with
her family, its her moms birthday, everyone gets a mysterious fortune in
their cookie, dad and the children are running late. Identify which are the
most important events. The other are information that makes the story
interesting but are not important events
