Ethical decision making

Ethics - rules based and principles based approaches

Ethical decision making

Ethical decision making and Kohlbergs 4 steps
1.
2.
3.
4.

Recognise the moral issue

Make moral judgement
Establish intent
Engage in moral behaviour

Lets take the example of petty cash lying around:

1. Moral issue
Could spend it on getting myself (employee) a coffee
2. Moral Judgement
It is immoral to do so as the money is not mine
3. Intent
I should put the petty cash where it belongs
4. Be Moral!
Ensure I do put it back and not buy myself a coffee!

What influences economic behaviour?

Issue related factors

How important it is to the decision maker eg, The more intense it is, the
more likely the decision will be ethical
Intensity is affected by:
Affects few
The affected are nearby
The affect is soon
The effect is huge
Most people agree on this
The affect of the decision will probably happen

Context Related
Certain behaviours are always rewarded or punished
It is the norm for this action to happen
Depends on culture and religion

Ethics - rules based and principles based approaches

There are 2 possible approaches for resolving ethical dilemmas:
1. Rules based
2. Principle based

Rules-based system
In the rules-based system, decisions adhere to the rules or the decision maker pays
penalties.
ADVANTAGES

The ethical response is clear (Clarity)

The same problems result in the same decisions (Standardisation)
Penalties are a deterrent against bad decisions
It is is easier to comply with the rules, as they are unambiguous, and can be
evidenced

DISADVANTAGES

Can create just a "box-ticking" approach

Not suitable to all possible situations.
One size does not necessarily fit all.

Principles-based System
In the principles system, decisions are made by people who adhere to the spirit of
the rule
ADVANTAGES

Not so rigid, allows for different circumstances.

Allows ethics to go beyond the minimum required.
Can develop own specific ethical rules / principles

DISADVANTAGES

The principles are so broad that they are of very little use as a guide to the
best ethical decision

Not as easy as simply complying with the rules, as they are ambiguous, and
can not be evidenced
